Leatherman 930402 Wave Deluxe Leather Sheath Review

I called AllSparesTools (the listed source for these sheathes) to veryify that they had _exactly_ the sheath pictured on amazon.com.The man at AllSparesTools assured me repeatedly that they did.No such luck! The sheath I received is the same fairly disappointing model other reviewers complained about. It really is not nearly the quality of the old style (as pictured), although it does get the job done.

Update: Amazon has changed the picture to reflect the actual product.Be aware that the old "horizontal logo" sheathes were much higher quality than this current version.

Leatherman 81080003K Squirt S4 Storm Gray Multitool with Small Scissors Review

Leatherman 81080003K Squirt S4 Storm Gray Multitool with Small Scissors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this little Leatherman! I've had mine attached to my keys for about 3 years and it is still going strong. I have the "S4" version with the scissors instead of pliers. When I saw that someone said the Micra was a better value, I had to come to the defense of the Squirt. Take it from someone who knows, the Squirt far surpasses the value of the Micra. I had gone through 2 Micras before I found the Squirt.

--Scissors Spring--
Micra - After a month or two it was so gummed up that the scissors would stay shut and would not open on their own. This was main reason I went through them so fast.
Squirt - Still springing after years, much more force behind this one.

--Scissor Grip--
Micra - When doing some serious cutting, the sharp metal frame and tools will start to slice into your hand.
Squirt - Thicker frame to house the tools on the outside lessens so it will not hurt your hand.

--Paint--
Micra - Start to flake and chip off after a month or so. (If you had to get one, get the stainless steel finish)
Squirt - Storm gray paint has scratched off but no big flakes like the Micra. The paint is bound to go through some serious wear and tear when on a keychain so some scratches are to be expected.

--Size--
Micra - Small
Squirt - Smaller

If you were thinking of getting the Micra, spend the extra 5 bucks and get a knife that is 5 times better.

Product Description:

The Squirt folds down to a tight, easy-to-transport 2-1/4 inches. Leatherman's Squirt S4: Small but Mighty

When it comes to convenience, it's tough to beat the Squirt S4. This multitool is ultra-compact, super tough, and it weighs just two ounces -- making it the perfect tool to pop into that backpack or slip into those slacks. And for such a tiny unit, the Squirt really packs a lot of tough, functional tools for any occasion. Take it on the road, stuff it into a pocket, throw it in the glove compartment, or take it camping. This little tool is ready to work or play.
Most of the tools are accessible from the outside for ease of operation, and the anodized aluminum handles offer rugged yet lightweight protection for decades of use. Micro-serrations help the scissors grip and cut even fine materials, and other features -- tweezers, knife, screwdrivers and more -- are all available without opening the tool. And at a mere 2-1/4 inches, this zippy little number does a great job of staying out of the way until you need it. A handy lanyard attachment hooks easily to a loop on your backpack or key ring.
Key User Features

The central feature of the Squirt, the scissors, is accessed by rotating the handles open in a quick, easy butterfly maneuver, and the blades can be lifted out of the handle using the nail nicks. Just rotate the blades out until they're fully extended. The Squirt's blades are 100-percent high-grade stainless steel, and it can be cleaned, dried, and re-oiled periodically -- which is recommended, especially after it's used in a damp environment.
The Squirt S4 also includes a 1-1/2-inch ruler. This is located on the back side of the nail file/cleaner, and it uses the tip of the blade as the zero point.

Small enough to stash anywhere, the Squirt has removable tweezers (Glacier Blue model depicted; this listing is for the Storm Gray model).
Expand your Squirt's capabilities with genuine Leatherman accessories like the Squirt protective sheath.

Leatherman 70101003K Juice C2 Pocket Multi-Tool, Inferno Red Review

Leatherman 70101003K Juice C2 Pocket Multi-Tool, Inferno Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my favorite leatherman because it has all of the "essential" tools AND is still small.

If you move down in the lineup (think: Squirt P4) then you still get a nice piece, but you're missing critical tools like a corkscrew (ever tried to open a bottle of wine on travel?). And if you move up in the lineup then you begin to get less useful extraneous tools which make the unit much larger and heavier.

The juice sits right in the middle, the ideal balance of utility and size. Highly recommended.

The Amazing Juice C2 Multitool

The Juice C2 is an extremely handy little devil with cool Inferno Red anodized aluminum handles. A true Leatherman, the C2 is well equipped with pliers, wire cutters and four screwdrivers; and it also comes with a corkscrew and a can and bottle opener. It's built on the smallest size chassis of all the Juice models. A lanyard attachment allows it to be easily attached to a backpack zipper, carabiner, or key chain, so you can take it anywhere, anytime, and it's ready to work or play.
Key User Features

The regular and hard-wire cutters are simple to lift out with their small notches. For easier removal of a cork, a notched assist is located at the end of the can/bottle opener. All you have to do is twist the corkscrew into a cork, then position the assist so the notch rests on the top edge of the bottle -- then lift the handles. It's as easy as opening a bottle of wine in your own kitchen.
The Juice C2 features straight knife blades made of 100-percent high-grade stainless steel. Highly corrosion-resistant, these blades are extremely easy to maintain -- just clean them, dry them, and occasionally re-oil them for years of long life and great service.

Leatherman 831062 Serac 2-LED Flashlight Review

Leatherman 831062 Serac 2-LED Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent little flashlight. Fits nicely into elastic side "pocket" of the stock Leatherman Wave and Charge sheaths (both leather and nylon versions). Build quality and especially finish is above and beyond any other flashlight in sub-$50 category. About 1/3" longer than Mag Solitaire, it produces so much light that Solitaire's beam becomes completely invisible. As a matter of fact, it is more than 2 times brighter than my previous EDC flashlight, a Surefire Executive Elite E1E (current price of E1E is $79).

Now, a few quick facts for the flashlight nuts.

- Beam has a relatively smooth spill with a well defined hotspot. As a matter of fact, there is a ring shaped shadow around a hotspot.

- Some artifacts , but barely noticeable. That has to be expected in such inexpensive light.

- Hotspot is pretty narrow, nearly 1o, so this light has an amazing throw for its size. With this light, I can easily count stripes on a raccoon's tail from 20 yards!

- Economy mode is flickery, which is expected. However, since the economy mode had to have so much less lumen output than a high power mode, flicker frequency is much lower than I expected. No flicker on high power, which is also expected.

- If you turn in on, off and then on again, it works just like when you turn it on and tap (high power).

- No way to turn it on/off momentarily without full press of a button, so I do not recommend it as a handgun companion light.

Leatherman 78105003K Juice XE6-Pocket Multi-Tool, Thunder Purple Review

Leatherman 78105003K Juice XE6-Pocket Multi-Tool, Thunder Purple
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a lot of multitools over the years, have an original Leatherman that's about 20 years old at this point, and have many other Leatherman tools so I know their line fairly well. The Juice is in some ways the best concept of them all, but my tool has one big flaw. The springs in my model are more than a little weak. It wouldn't be so bad if it were for one of the small tools, but unfortunately it's for the larger knife blade and the Wharncliffe style blade. Usually the springs in Leatherman products are quite strong, but not in this case. Perhaps I just got one with a few weak springs. Also, the tools don't lock into place as on many multitool products these days.

Overall, though I like it and it has many pluses. The springs for the screwdriver are strong, though, and it snaps into place with a satisfying click. Tools fold from the inside and outside of the handle, so you get a few more smaller tools such as small screwdrivers. It's more compact than your typical multitool. As someone already mentioned, the knife blades appear to be hollow ground. (I'd actually prefer straight sides for added strength, but many people do like hollow ground blades for ease of sharpening and lightness). And the bright metallic colors are cool, except that this one isn't really Thunder Purple so much as dark passionate pink. Finally, the Juice comes in several different models with a greater or lesser number of tools, depending on your needs.

Except possibly for the Leatherman Wave, I think this is the best tool Leatherman has made yet.

Leatherman's Juice Pocket Multitool

The Leatherman Juice Xe6 pocket multitool packs 16 powerful, secure and easily accessible implements into little more than 3 inches. With a slightly thicker chassis than the CS4 and KF4, and protected by Thunder Purple anodized aluminum handles, this model really has it all. Along with pliers, wire cutters and four screwdrivers, the XE6 contains a saw, awl and diamond-coated file -- and it provides a choice of straight or serrated knife blades. Serrated scissors, a corkscrew, and a can and bottle opener are also easily accessible, and the lanyard attachment keeps all these tools close at hand. Powerful but still compact, the XE6 will conquer most any task in a flash.

The integrated scissors are easily accessed with a nail nick, and the regular and hard-wire cutters are simple to lift out with their small notches. For easier removal of a cork, a notched assist is located at the end of the can/bottle opener. Leatherman 830038 New Wave Multi-Tool with Nylon Sheath Review

Leatherman 830038 New Wave Multi-Tool with Nylon Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this along with the bit driver extension and 40-bit assortment to keep in my vehicle. I've had them less than two months and have already been grateful to have the tool handy in the center console on a few occasions. The included tools combined with the bits meet a lot of common tool needs. I also had bit kit from OSH I now carry in the vehicle, because they work nicely with the multi-tool, as well.

I have had trouble with other multi-tools in the past, either for not having the necessary tools or being awkward to use. I have no trouble with this one, and it's comfortable to handle. It's a very reasonable weight, too, not as heavy as some I've had in the past, despite having a great selection of blades. The blades are easily accessed, and the saw is very handy.

I wanted the nylon sheath rather than the leather, but found two model numbers (with different prices) that seemed to describe identical products, both with the nylon sheath. A little research revealed the following:

830037 - Leather sheath - Box
830038 - Nylon sheath - Box
830039 - Leather sheath - Clam pack
830040 - Nylon sheath - Clam pack.

I opted for the 830038, nylon/boxed version, mainly because it was (at least when I purchased) less expensive than the clam pack. I hope this helps anyone else wondering about the various model numbers.

I used to own a full-size Leatherman tool, but found I rarely had it with me when I needed it because it was too bulky so it always sat at home in a drawer. This tool does a nice job of balancing commonly used tools in a small enough design that I can carry it around without it feeling cumbersome. The trade-off for the reduced size is fewer features. But I've found I don't really miss the features that were left off this particular model because I didn't use them very often. This model still has several different screwdriver heads, a knife, pliers, and scissors (which work "ok", kind of like elementary school classroom scissors). And for most common tasks, that's plenty. There are some other functions on it but the ones I mentioned are the ones I use the most. The build quality feels solid, just like a typical Leatherman.

Leatherman Expanse e33L Straight Blade Knife Review

Leatherman Expanse e33L Straight Blade Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the e33l for about more than a month now, and it has stood upto whatever cutting tasks I have thrown at the blade. Firstly, the "blade-launcher" is really good, and has no springs -- so the possibility of breakage is less. The blad is real sharp -- I could see it when my cheap knife took ages slicing through a nylon rope while the e33l took almost no time. The handle is ergonomic (larger for the blade size, which makes it a good grip). The blade really looks wicked. :)

I also liked the bottle opener, and the carabiner clip is very sturdy indeed. Overall, an excellent value for money in a ~$30 knife. My favorite EDC now.

A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer, since you're less likely to slip and cut yourself. A good edge means you make the cuts you want to make quickly.

Expanse Series knives are crafted out of US-made 154CM steel from Crucible Metals. 154CM is used because it has exceptional edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Leatherman compared 154CM steel to 420HC, another durable, reliable steel used in knife blades, and found that 154CM holds an edge approximately three times longer. This means your knife will be sharp and ready to use when you reach for it.

When it does come time to sharpen your knife, you'll appreciate that Leatherman knives can be re-sharpened using the standard methods. There are many effective ways to sharpen a knife, so you should be able to find one that works for you. Sharpening stones, round files, and special kits (not included) all provide a nice edge.

Locking, Drop-Style Blade for Safety
A liner lock lets you secure the blade of your e33L in the open position, so you don't have to worry about it closing on your hand while you cut. This safety feature is especially important when slicing through tough materials like nylon webbing or braided rope. Having a liner lock instead of a traditional lockback system makes the e33L easier to open with one hand. It also ensures that it's easy to unlock the blade and close the knife.

Leatherman's registered Blade Launcher technology makes opening Expanse Series knives even easier. With the Blade Launcher, you simply engage a conveniently placed mechanism to open your knife. A standard thumb stud contributes to the simplicity of one-handed operation, too.

Leatherman uses blades shaped in a drop-style for all their e33 knives because they fit nicely in the handle of your knife when not in use. Plus, a drop-style blade is stronger than a clip point blade, which you might see on other pocket knives. The 2.6-inch blade of the e33L provides plenty of versatility. This means you can rely on the e33L, whether you're cutting rope to build a litter during a mountain rescue operation or carving your name on a bunk at Scout camp.

About Leatherman: Time-Tested Survival Tools
The original Pocket Survival Tool, devised by mechanical engineer Tim Leatherman, hit the market in 1983. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one million of them a year. In the blockbuster movie "Speed," Keanu Reeves used a Leatherman to save the passengers on a doomed bus. Even MacGyver has been seen with one of these trusty tools. But their best reviews come from everyday people. The Leatherman survival tool is a mainstay of travelers, sailors, fishermen, hunters, backpackers, and scouts.

The simple, durable Expanse Series knives draw on Leatherman's legacy. While the e33L knife doesn't feature the signature Leatherman pliers design, it is available in several multi-tool variations. If you work with rope or clean fish often, you might enjoy the versatility offered by the e33Lx, which has a combination straight and serrated blade. Similarly, Leatherman offers the e33T, a model for those who utilize Phillips and flathead screwdrivers on a daily basis, as well as the e33B, a multi-knife with an integrated bit driver.

All Leatherman tools, including the e33L Straight Blade Knife, are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Leatherman 831104 Super Tool-300 Multitool in Gift Tin / Premium Sheath Review

Leatherman 831104 Super Tool-300 Multitool in Gift Tin / Premium Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seems like the Super Tool 300 from Leatherman sucks! Being a loyal Leatherman fan for many years I purchased the new Super Tool 300 ( I do own another 2 Supertools) hoping it will serve my needs but literally it just fell into pieces just after 2 or 3 times I have used it - the screw which hold pliers jaw to the handle wend loose so you could unscrew it with bare hands! Also the can opener blade was tend to fell through the handle, puncturing my palm every time I used the multitool. OK, under the warranty I got the new one - you won't believe but the screw was still dangling there! So the trip to the UPS office AGAIN!!!

My question to Leatherman guys is following: WHY DON'T YOU ADD SOME NUT & BOLT LOCKER PASTE into that screw??? I am ready to pay that extra $1 instead of wasting my( and yours!)time on that warranty procedure. Or, sell those wrenches so everybody can tight the bolt themselves???

The problem is that I also purchased two more Leathermans to give them away as gifts to my friends - so now they have the same problem...:(

The leather sheath is not completely made of leather but also a rubber material on the sides, which most possibly allows user to stuff more accessories into the sheath, so that is why sheath feels much bigger and bulkier than the multitool itself. Forget about old REAL premium leather sheath which was serving years and years - new one looked well worn just after a week at the belt!

Sorry Leatherman but I guess your legendary quality goes down, guess those tools now are being built in China!

Leatherman 830037 Wave Multitool with Leather Sheath Review

Leatherman 830037 Wave Multitool with Leather Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Leatherman claims this is their best selling multitool. Most reviews on Amazon and online forums are super positive. Does the Wave live up to the hype? Yes, to some extent, but it has some issues, mainly cost and weight.

The good:

This is a nice full-featured multitool. You get one plain-edge and one serrated knife, both can be opened with one hand without opening the whole tool. Useful set of scredrivers: large and medium plain, medium philips, micro plain and philips for eyeglasses. Wood saw, and nice metal file + saw. Can opener and kinda-OK scissors. All in all, good set of tools, and all lock securely in place. Of course, it also has full sized pliers :)

The bad:

- Heavy: 8.5 oz, or 240 grams. Too heavy to carry in my pants pocket. I don't carry tools on my belt, but probably this would feel heavy there also.
- Because of the outside opening blades, there are sharp edges when the tool is closed, which I can imagine would eat through your pocket if you put it there.
- Blades designed for right-hand thumb opening. If a knife is designed for one-hand opening, I would much rather have it ambidextrous.
- Ruler (cm and inches) is much less useful than on other tools, because it is on the inside. You open the whole tool to use it, and the pliers get in the middle of the ruler line. Also the ruler markings are not as clearly readable as other tools. For me, the ruler is actually a very useful feature, so the Wave scores a minus here.
- Medium philips and plain screwdriver are actually in a bit holder, which has many issues: too short, feels a little flimsy, and the bits are not standard size, so you can't use anything but what you buy from Leatherman. This is another minus compared to other simpler and cheaper multitools.
- Unusual amount of friction when opening the screwdrivers. May only be an issue on mine.

Recommendations:

This is a good tool if you can get it on sale. Even so, I think you should look at these alternatives:

Leatherman Blast: same size and same tools as Wave except the extra serrated blade. Lighter (6.9 oz or 196 grams) and considerably cheaper. Philips screwdriver is fixed and way better (bit driver is sold separately if you need it). Knife blade is a tad bit longer than Wave. Ruler is way better. No sharp edges to snag in your pocket. Only downside is that none of the tools open from the outside; to open the knife, you neeed to open the whole tool. I own one and I think it is Leatherman's best overall tool.

Leatherman Juice series: smaller and lighter than the Wave, and shaped smoother, more contoured to be pocket-friendly. Blades etc can be accessed from the outside, but not one-hand openers like the Wave. The main downside is that the pliers are a little smaller, but not a big deal in most cases. This is Leatherman's answer to the Swiss Army Knife - most even have cork openers :) I own one and I like it.

Victorinox SwissTool and Spirit: most tools accessible from the outside but blade is not one-hand opener. Fit and finish is better than anything Leatherman makes. I do not own them, but they are next on my list when I decide to buy another multitool.

I hope this was helpful!

Leatherman 831219 Style Black Keychain Tool with Scissor Review

Leatherman 831219 Style Black Keychain Tool with Scissor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying this thing is tiny.It is barely longer than a Squirt and only half as tall.It has scissors, a file, blade, tweezers, and screwdriver.Overall a good choice of tools. The tools themselves are basically the same size as on the Squirt S4.The blade, tweezers, and screwdrivers are all the same size, and the scissors are the same size as the Squirt PS4 scissors. The file is slightly longer and narrower than the S4 file.

One of the problems is that the nick on the file is difficult to use.It is not deep enough so it's not alwasy easy to get it open. The other issue is there is a rather large gap between the blade and the case. It's big enough for something to get stuck in.Like a key, which has happened to me already. The scissors can be difficult to access as well because it is in the middle. Also if the scissors and file happen to both be open all the way and you try to close the scissors it may stick a bit because it has a tendency to not go straight back down so you have to nudge it over a little bit so it stays in its slot.Besides being about half the size of a Squirt, it is also bit less than half the weight of a Squirt.Very light.

Considering how small it is, there is quite a bit of functionality in it.The design needs to be tightened up a bit, which would make it even slightly smaller.I personally prefer the Squirt PS4 because of the extra functions, but this is a perfect backup tool to attach to a backpack zipper or toss in the glove compartment. It's also a good alternative if your keychain is already massively huge. It's so small and light it you won't even notice it's there.

Mut EOD, MOLLE tactical, Black Review

Mut EOD, MOLLE tactical, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is in response to a previous review, not to negate what they said at all, but to ask the question whether or not they knew what they were buying. The MUT EOD was designed for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Breaching personnel. The "cheap" parts are very valuable to those of us who carry a black rifle (AR-15, M4 or M-16) as part of our job. The bolt clearing device works extremely well and can put you back in the action in seconds, rather than needing to "sit this one out".Having scored at least one firing pin with disastrous results, I am thankful Leatherman put the softer bronze cleaning blade on this tool.Nothing on the MUT EOD was a mistake. The parts that can wear out are easily replaced (wire cutter, scraper blade, etc.) and the rest of the tool is sturdy enough to take some very serious punishment. My suggestion is simply this: If you don't need a C-4 punch or det-cord cutter/crimper, get the utility version of the MUT.It is excellent for the handywork of daily living and doesn't have the job specific items that the EOD does. But, if you need the EOD tools, this is simply the best you can get.Rugged, ready and a real lifesaver when you need it.

Leatherman 831204 Squirt ES4 Black Keychain Tool with Scissor Review

Leatherman 831204 Squirt ES4 Black Keychain Tool with Scissor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own numerous Leatherman multitools including the Mini, Pulse, PST, Juice S2, Juice SC2, Wave, Skeletool, Skeletool CX, Micra, Squirt P4, and Squirt S4. I also own numerous Victorinox Swiss Army Knives and multitools. I truly respect and admire the stellar designs utilized by both companies. Having used and owned all these different tools, I feel that the Leatherman Squirt ES4 and PS4 are now unparalleled as the best keychain size multi tools fit for everyday carry (EDC).

PROS
1. Small size, shorter than the Micra, although thicker
2. Lightweight, lighter than the Micra
3. Pliers, which Victorinox does not offer in any of their 58 mm size Swiss Army Knives (SAK)
4. In the ES4 model there are wire strippers (20, 18, 16, 14, 12 gauges)
5. Scissors
6. Flat screwdriver, medium size
7. Flat Philips driver
8. File, with fine and coarse sides
9. Knife, with clip point blade
10. Keyring
11. Bottle opener
12. All tools are accessible with the pliers closed
13. Aesthetically pleasing design with compact body

CONS
1. Colored handles, which I do not expect to hold up well on a keychain. The Micra has the best design in this instance with its steel handles
2. No toothpick, which is not important to me, but I always hear how people seem to want this in a SAK
3. No tweezers, which I do miss a little as they can be useful for removing splinters
4. No small sized flat screwdriver, which was on the Micra
5. Scissors are much smaller than the Squirt S4 but on par with the Victorinox 58 mm SAKs

CONCLUSION
The Leatherman Squirt PS4 and ES4 offer an amazing set of tools which include pliers and scissors in the same model, unlike the older S4 (scissors) or P4 (pliers) models or the Micra in which the presence of one excluded the other. If Leatherman ever makes the ES4 or PS4 with plain steel or aluminum handles, I feel that they would be close to perfect.

Leatherman 68010101K Crunch Pocket Multi-Tool with Leather Sheath Review

Leatherman 68010101K Crunch Pocket Multi-Tool with Leather Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I found out Leatherman makes a tool with locking pliers, I had to have one. So I bought one. Impressions follow:

1. Usually things are larger than I expect, but this one was smaller than I expected. Maybe it's just the fact that I've used big, bulky Vise-Grips all my life, but I really expected this tool to be hefty. It's not bad that it's small, and the plier jaws open nice and wide despite their small size, but I'm nonetheless surprised that it's no bigger than my Wave, even when open.

2. It's not as hard to prepare for use as I had expected. Yes, you have to unfold the plier jaws, and yes, you have to clip the handle into place on the jaws; but, considering that with ANY locking plier you will have to stand there and adjust the force screw until the jaws clamp down with just the right amount of force anyway, the extra "assembly" needed to use the pliers isn't significant.

3. The craftsmanship isn't as good as I expected. Everything is plenty strong, but the fit and finish isn't up to par with the newer, "post-Wave" tools. The plier jaws aren't the exact same width, the folding tool lock is hard to push and doesn't give a lot of feedback, thefolding tools themselves flop around a bit, the hinge on the jaws is just a little too tight, the folded-sheet-metal handle is just a tiny bit too wide for the stuff it holds and so it got crimped a little when the rivets were driven into place, etc. It's not crappy by any means, but it doesn't have that laser-cut, precision-machined feel that my Wave has.

Three stars for doing what it says it does without having any noticeable weaknesses. If they improved the design spec so everything fits just right, it would get four stars. If it were the tool of my dreams with everything I want and nothing I don't, it would get five.

-- UPDATE 5/15/2008 --

I've had my Crunch now for several months, and I feel compelled to bump my review up a notch. Why? Well, it isn't because I've come to appreciate the not-quite-perfect fit and finish of the tool -- that still bugs me a little bit. Rather, it's because over the past few months I've discovered that the Crunch is THE most useful multi-tool ever created.

I took a gamble when I bought my Crunch, because I had serious doubts about how useful a mini-size lockjaw plier could be, even when combined with a token assortment of tools. All I can say is, "boy was I wrong". If anything, the small size of the lockjaws make them even more useful than full-size Vise-Grips, because they can be used in so many more places than Vise-Grips can. Also, given that multi-tools tend to have crappy leverage compared to full-size pliers, the ability to clamp the lockjaws onto something and then focus all your attention on moving the thing instead of keeping the jaws from slipping is unspeakably convenient.

I was initially concerned by the relatively small selection of fold-out tools that the Crunch has, compared to other multi-tools...but to be honest, most other multi-tools just have 50 slightly-different sizes of flathead screwdrivers anyway, when all you'll ever need is one. Well, the Crunch has three, two of which are combined with a can opener and a metal file, which means that there's really only one flathead screwdriver worth mentioning. So there's no unnecessary duplicity there. Meanwhile, the knife and the crosshead screwdriver are predictably indispensable, and the metal file is handy from time to time. So all told, the tools that the Crunch has are more than adequate.

My complaints about the fit-and-finish of the Crunch still stand; Leatherman could do a better job of making everything fit together just right, and I wish they'd put in the time to do so. But that said, the Crunch is definitely THE Leatherman to buy if you're actually going to use it for real work.

Product Description:

The Crunch folds down to just 4 inches, but it packs a full range of useful tools that are ready for work. Leatherman's Hardy Crunch Multitool

Made for the most demanding professionals and do-it-yourselfers, Leatherman's Crunch multi-purpose tool features locking pliers that spread wide enough to clamp a 1-inch pipe, but it folds up into a tidy 4-inch, 6-ounce package for convenient storage in a pocket or bag. Remove the adjusting screw and you'll find a 1/4-inch hex-bit adapter built right in. The pliers lock into position like vise grips, leaving both hands free for other work, and all the interior blades lock too, for optimal safety and power.
Key User Features

To open the interior blades, all you have to do is partially open the handles and use the nail nick to rotate the selected blade out and into the ready position. Extend the blades fully to engage the locks, and to release a locked blade, simply push the lock release button located on the outside of the handle.
The regular and hard-wire cutters are located in the plier jaws. The hard-wire cutter is the small notch at the base of the wire cutting area. The regular wire cutters are ideal for softer wire grades, and the hard-wire cutters are great for sturdier materials like fish hooks.
The Crunch is made from 100-percent high-grade stainless steel, and it can be cleaned, dried, and re-oiled periodically -- which is recommended, especially after it's used in a damp environment.

The Crunch can clamp pipe up to 1 inch in diameter.

The MUT is a great multitool and has everything you would expect from Leatherman, but it also has very specific items that will come in handy if you are a shooter, especially of AR-15 or M-16s.It has a firing pin removal punch that is custom made for Black Rifles, along with a bronze carbon scraping tool that will work on all guns without damaging steel parts that it comes in contact with. The wire cutters are replaceable and the web cutter is pretty nifty as well. It's pretty big and bulky, but will replace several range tools if you are a shooter.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality

In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.
