LEATHERMAN Fuse Black Oxide with Cap Crimper Black Nylon Sheath Model 830475 Review

LEATHERMAN Fuse Black Oxide with Cap Crimper Black Nylon Sheath Model 830475
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First things first, the pliers on the Fuse do not have a "cap crimper" even though the description above suggests otherwise. For those who want this tool for EOD purposes this function's omission may be a big deal. However, if you are not going to use the cap crimper it is best not to have one because it makes the plier tips more susceptible to structural failure (a problem SOG has solved). Also, as a side note for those looking for a knifeless Fuse w/ a black oxide coating: Leatherman does not make one, so don't believe internet sites that claim to sell them.

Overall, I really enjoy carrying this multi-tool.The blade comes nearly razor sharp and is almost as long as the handle (Leatherman knows how to optimize the use of free space). All the implements lock tight and are easily unlocked. To make things even better, the reach of the flathead and Philips drivers is extraordinary, very useful if you work on electronics (this is one of the main reasons my Leatherman Juice S4 sometimes finds itself sitting at home while I go out).Further, the finish holds up fairly well, though other metal instruments such as keys tend to scratch it.

If you are one who is trying to decide whether to purchase a Fuse or a Kick, definitely pick the Fuse: it has locking implements, an upgraded plier head (same as on the Wave and Charge TTi), scissors, a longer blade, and comes in black. The only advantages the Kick has is price (however, there's only a $10 difference between the satin finish Fuse and Kick) and the possibility of adding a pocket clip. The Fuse is the better choice by far.

Works with Core, Surge, Charge, Wave, Blast, Fuse and Kick

I have a Blast and this was a gift for my father, who has a Charge. This adapter doesn't work on either of our tools. The one that works is called the "Universal Adapter" instead of the "Stadard Adapter".

Product Description:
Leatherman tools came about as Tim Leatherman, founder of Leatherman Tools, traveled abroad. Leatherman traveled abroad in a 1969 Fiat. During their travels it was discovered that the car was cranky and had leaky pipes. Leatherman conceived of the idea of a pocket survival tool. He worked in the basement of his home to create this tool. He wanted a tool with full size pliers with a pocket knife. Leatherman created the multipurpose tool calling it Mr. Crunch to which he received a patent for this. Sales grew and Leatherman introduced another tool. This one has more features with all locking blades. Then Leatherman decides to go small. The ultra tiny micra becomes and remains the category's top seller. Be sure to check out the Leatherman Surge Multi-Tool with Black Nylon Sheath. With these features, plus Leatherman's strongest scissors yet, Surge is sure to make a splash at the work site. Leatherman 830427 K502x 3.1"strt/nyl Pocket Knife W/bit Driver Review

Leatherman 830427 K502x 3.1'strt/nyl Pocket Knife W/bit Driver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The K502x is a great knife. It is that simple but I'll give you some pros and cons

Pros:
Fits really well in your hand when it is closed and open.
Rubber grip prevents you from slipping when applying alot of force even with sweaty hands
Since the knife has a 154 CM blade it can be sharpened to dangerous proportions.I've gotten it sharp enough to shave with using a water only fine grind stone.
The screw driver provides excellent torque and bits stay snug while in use.
The thumb nub provides perfect leverage for opening using only your thumb.(however it is only right handed)

Cons:
The back of the blade is a sharp as an ice skate. So watch out when using the thumb stud to open the blade if you finger slides along the 90 degree edge it probably won't cut you but it will leave a mark.
The bits stored in the handle move a but but don't fall out.But I imagine as the knife gets old they could possibly fall out.
The rubber is not as durable as I would like but it has lasted so far with only loosing a little piece of the corner after someone used my knife as a hammer.
The 154 CM metal is not rust proof. The blade should be oiled regularly and kept dry if possible.
The belt clip is designed for thicker belts. With my braided cloth belt the knife has come loose while running.

Again overall this is an amazing knife.I'd buy another one if the one I have ever wore out, after its 25 year warranty. :-)

Winchester 22-01347 Small Wood Handle Tool Review

Winchester 22-01347 Small Wood Handle Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this tool for free with another (Gerber) multi-tool. I would not buy this tool for much money.

If you want a folding pair of small needle-nose pliers, this is a pretty good choice. The motion is smooth, the machining is fairly precise, and the spring-loaded action is really handy. The pliers are indeed small; they are suitable for items no more than 1/4 inch (8mm) wide. The handles are an adequate 2.5 inches long, and while they are not quite level with one another, it's no big deal. Pliers feel quite strong, with minimal flexing.

The large straight screwdriver is poorly made, with a rounded-off instead of perfectly straight shape. The can and bottle openers are abnormally shallow. The serrated blade is very thick but not very sharp. The straight blade is tiny and not sharp. The cross-head screwdriver is tiny, like a sub-#1 Philips but more vaguely shaped. The nail file looks and feels like a student project. In short, none of the fold-out tools is of a quality to match the pliers and handles -- they say "made by the lowest bidder in China".

The wood accents on the handles are attractive and feel good, but they do make the handles surpringly thick -- about 18mm at the thickest point.

For the pliers and appearance, I would give 4 stars. For the other built-in tools, I would give 1 star (a failing grade).

Leatherman 831060 Serac 1-LED Flashlight Review

Leatherman 831060 Serac 1-LED Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this little light because it uses commonly found batteries and small enough to attach to a keychain. The construction quality is solid and feels like it will be a dependable light for many years to come. The switch at the butt of the flashlight seems to be fairly robust. It takes just enough effort to turn it -- this way you don't have to worry about accidentally turning it on in the pocket. I like the removable keychain holder. This design seems to hold the flashlight well while allowing easy quick release. Hopefully this keychain holder will not get loose over time.

About the light quality. It is bright enough for most emergency situations. The only thing that I didn't like about this flashlight is that the light is actually slightly violet. The further away the lit subject is, the more violet the light seems. This is the reason for the 4 stars and not 5.

This light is not suitable for self defense as it is bright but not blindingly bright. It is small enough to hold in your hand but not enough to strike with.

Overall, I am satisfied with the light. It is relatively inexpensive and will last a long time I hope. Flashlight buffs might look elsewhere but I find the quality on par with more expensive tactical lights. The size makes it a reliable flashlight, because the only reliable light is the one you actually have.

Leatherman Surge Multitool - Model# 830161
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned a Swiss Army knife for a long time but while it can be very usefull it is not really up to what I would call toolgrade. The Leatherman Surge meets that standard as much as nay multitool can. All of the blades and tools lock into place and are solidly made. The blades are incredibly sharp. It may not be as comfortable as standard single purpose tool but it is certainly more versatile thatn a screwdriver of needlenose plier. I particularly like the spring on the scissors. Itis much more substantial and cannot slip out of its channel.

I highly recommend the Surge multitool.

Gerber 22-01545 Black Diesel Multi-Plier with Sheath Review

Gerber 22-01545 Black Diesel Multi-Plier with Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been searching for a replacement for my Schrade Tough Tool, which while giving me many years of reliable service before being stolen from a jobsite I was on, was a little heavy and clunky for my purposes.

Gerber multi-pliers always seemed very 'handy', but seemed a little lightweight for my purposes. But I asked around among my trusted friends and associates and I decided the Gerber Diesel had the strength and the features I was after. And after testing this bad boy in the field, I can truly say it performed without flaw.

My main concern was the strength of the pliers themselves (the Schrade was extremely strong and stable). I put this to the test immediately upon getting to work. I'm not sure what the reviewer who claimed the pliers had a design flaw was cranking on, but I cranked hex bolts/nuts, wing-nuts and all kinds of other fasteners with NO PROBLEMS! The needle-nose pliers were perfect for tight spots and sensitive moves with electronics, and I snipped everything from fishing-line to heavy-gauge wire and metal banding like butter with the snips.

The other issue I was concerned with was the 'one-handed' plier operation. This is really the key feature with any Gerber multi-tool, and I had NO problems at all getting the pliers to engage by flicking my wrist while holding one side of the two handles as instructed. It was a little stiff at first, but after a dozen or so flicks, the action was perfect.

Lastly, I was worried about all the reviews of the black coating coming off on the user's hands. And right out of the box there was a small amount of black residue left on my hands after handling the tool for the first time. But I've had this problem with ANY black coated tool I've ever owned (try handling impact-driver sockets). I simply pulled out all the tools and wiped them off with a cloth and I haven't had any of the residue on my hands at all since. My thoughts on this are if you are afraid of getting a little dirty, then maybe you better take up another hobby and let someone else handle the tools.

If you actually USE your tools, and don't just buy them because they look cool, you will love having this on your hip. It is a fine looking unit, but it ain't just a pretty face, it'll tear up any job you use a multi-tool for.

Job-specific tools make any task safer and easier to accomplish quickly. That's why this tool also includes a cross-point screwdriver, small, medium, and large flat-blade screwdrivers, a can opener, a bottle opener, a file, a saw, and scissors, as well as a dedicated wire cutter/stripper.

Safe, User-Friendly Design for Peace of Mind

A nylon ballistic-cloth sheath keeps the tool protected when not in use.View Larger.
The refined lock and sliding buttons associated with this system are easy to use, and they're intuitively placed on the tool's handle for easy access.
Despite its broad range of features, this tool weighs just 8.6 ounces. It measures 6.61 inches overall and 4.92 inches closed. The handle is well-balanced for comfortable use and showcases an elegant bead blast finish.
This Gerber Multi-Tool also comes with a nylon ballistic-cloth sheath so that you can keep it protected when it's not in use.
Gerber's History of Ingenuity
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance.

Leatherman Wave Black Oxide w/Cap Crimper - Leatherman 830489 Review

Leatherman Wave Black Oxide w/Cap Crimper - Leatherman 830489
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think this my 5th or 6th product from Leatherman. Why did I buy it? Because it is black. Just waaaaaay cooler than a regular Wave.

Why not five stars, then? The product has a few minor flaws: just like the regular Wave, the bit holder is a little bit on the weak side - no big deal, really. What really can be a bit of a problem is that the smaller blades, can opener etc. are impossible to get out when the tool is new (hint use a small coin and lots of WD-40). Maybe the black oxide coating is resulting in higher friction between the parts - dunno, but something the engineers at Leatherman should look into.

Do I recommend the product? Absolutely. Best form factor, good value for money. Does it HAVE to be the black version? Maybe not. I have both - the black one is to show off, the regular (stainless) one gets used a lot.

Are there "better" sharpeners on the market? Probubly. But as an all around sharpener (I have several styles by several different manufacturers) this little gem is hands down THE BEST! Otherwise I would not have spent a week tracking this one down on the internet after all my local suppliers were "out of stock" or had moved on to more expensive less useful models. The thing folds up and goes in my pocket, it also has a handy hole for a lanyard which my new one is on. It does a great job on my chefs knives, my hunting knife and my serrated kives as well. It's easy for my big fingers to hold on to and steady on the edge of the counter when I am sharpening. I bought an extra one to put away in case this one gets "lost" or I give mine away to a friend. (In case you can't tell I really like it and would buy another one in a minute flat!)

Leatherman Crater c33Lx Combo Straight/Serrated Blade Knife Review

Leatherman Crater c33Lx Combo Straight/Serrated Blade Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the Leatherman name your know you are going to get a decent blade for the price. I did not buy this knife on Amazon, I actually bought it at Fry's ( for $14.99) I needed a new knife for work and thought that for the price that I couldn't pass it up. So far so good, the blade came out very sharp so BE CAREFUL! The blade on my leatherman multitool was sharper than this one out of the box but this one is still sharp enough to shave the hair off of my arm after about 5 passes. The handle looks kind of like cheap plastic at first glance but is actually durable nylon/glass construction. The only two complaints that I have are that the surface of the knife handle is a little to smooth for my dry hands. Also the smoothness of the handle makes it easier for this knife to slide back out of your pocket even after you have clipped it on. I am thinking about sanding the area directly under the clip to make it stay in my pocket a little better (note it hasn't actually fallen out of my pocket yet). The other complaint that I have is that the carabiner latch is sort of loose, meaning it is easy to accidentally knock the clip out of place which might make it come off of whatever you clipped it to. Other than that I will state that the bottle opening feature of the carabiner works quite well as I have tested it on many occasion. The thumb stud works very well and the blade seems to snap open more quickly than the force applied even though it has no assisted opening feature. For the price it is a very sharp knife that appears to be very durable and will open with a satisfying snap. It so far, has been a great knife for the price.

The Leatherman c33Lx Combo Straight/Serrated Blade Knife offers:

    Blade Launcher technology
    A slim, 60-percent glass-filled nylon handle
    A liner lock for safety

A new clip lets Crater series knives sit deep in your pocket. View larger.

The c33Lx is a slim, elegant folding knife. View larger.

The convenient carabiner/bottle opener folds to guard the blade's tip. View larger.Simple, Lightweight, and Reliable
Sometimes, you don't need a toothpick, a pair of tin snips, or toenail scissor--you just need a strong, sharp, reliable cutting blade. The Crater c33Lx is a streamlined, folding knife with a sturdy, locking blade. Its durable, 60-percent glass-filled nylon handle is shaped and balanced to sit comfortably in your hand. And weighing in at just 2.38 ounces, the c33Lx will rest snugly in your pocket or pack.
The in-handle storage system means you won't have to carry a sheath, and the knife's folding carabiner clip makes it easy to attach your knife to a belt loop or the side of your pack, so it's always on hand when you need it. Mariners who keep their tools on lines will have a special appreciation for this clip. And it does double-duty as a bottle-opener. You can also opt to secure your knife with the included removable pocket clip. In short, this knife was designed to meet the practical needs of active outdoorsmen, and it delivers.
Premium, US-Made Steel for Performance
A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer and easier to control. A blade with a durable precision edge lets you make the cuts you want safely and quickly.
Crater Series knives are crafted out of US-made 420HC steel from Crucible Metals. This steel was selected by Leatherman because it provides excellent edge retention, which means your knife stays sharp longer. Plus 420HC is tough, not brittle, and it is corrosion resistant.
Crater Series knives are finished with a hollow grind, the same "premium" grind found on straight razors and some high-end kitchen cutlery. This grind technique creates a natural release when cutting, so materials don't stick to the knife, giving you a better cutting edge. The knife's full 2.6-inch blade provides plenty of versatility for cooking up backcountry meals, cutting rope to build the perfect bear hang, or even breaking down boxes to toss in the recycling.
Locking, Drop-Style Blade for Safety
A liner lock lets you secure the blade of your c33L in the open position, so you don't have to worry about it closing on your hand while you cut. This safety feature is especially important when slicing through tough materials like braided nylon rope. Having a liner lock instead of a traditional lockback system makes the c33Lx easier to open with one hand. It also ensures that it's easy to unlock the blade and close the knife.
Leatherman's registered Blade Launcher technology makes opening this Crater Series knife even easier. With the Blade Launcher, you simply engage a conveniently placed mechanism to open your knife. A standard thumb stud contributes to the simplicity of one-handed operation, too.
Leatherman uses blades shaped in a drop-style for all their c33 knives because they fit nicely in the handle of your knife when not in use. Plus, a drop-style blade is stronger than a clip point blade, which you might see on other pocket knives.
When it is time to sharpen your knife, you'll appreciate that Leatherman knives can be re-sharpened using standard methods. There are many ways to maintain a sharp blade, so you should be able to find one that works well for you. Sharpening stones, round files, and special kits (not included) can help ensure long-lasting performance.
About Leatherman: Time-Tested Survival Tools
The original Pocket Survival Tool, devised by mechanical engineer Tim Leatherman, hit the market in 1983. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one million tools a year. In the blockbuster movie "Speed," Keanu Reeves used a Leatherman to save the passengers on a doomed bus. Even MacGyver has been seen with one of these trusty tools. But their best reviews come from everyday people. The Leatherman survival tool is a mainstay of travelers, sailors, fishermen, hunters, backpackers, and scouts.
The simple, lightweight Crater Series knives draw on Leatherman's legacy. While the c33Lx knife doesn't feature the signature Leatherman pliers design, it is available in several multi-tool variations. If you enjoy the ease of sharpening a traditional straight blade knife, the c33L might be the perfect knife for you. Similarly, Leatherman offers the c33 for those who prefer a knife without a blade launcher, and the c33T, for those who utilize Phillips and flathead screwdrivers on a daily basis. Leatherman also offers the c33B, a multi-knife with an integrated bit driver.

All Leatherman tools, including the c33Lx Combo Straight/Serrated Blade Knife, are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Leatherman Skeletool Aluminum Scale Multitool - Leatherman 830845 Review

Leatherman Skeletool Aluminum Scale Multitool - Leatherman 830845
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
-Backstory-
One of the criterion for a great multitool is versatility, and for the longest time I thought that meant more blades, attachments, and enhancements. While that's partially true, that also means a bigger, heavier footprint. When I finally upgraded to the heavyweight behemoth that is the Leatherman 830160 Surge Pocket Multitool with Leather Sheath and found myself leaving it at home more and more often because of its weight, I realized something was wrong.

The reality is most blades/tool-blades seldom see the light of day outside of camping, and the added weight and size only serve to discourage daily carry.Barring camping or novelty, when was the last time you used your pocket-knife's can-opener? Wood saw? Awl? Corkscrew?? Is there anything you absolutely need scissors for that can't be accomplished with a blade or wire cutter?Do you unconditionally NEED eyeglass-sized screwdrivers on you 24-7?

Most daily applications can be accomplished with a simple blade, a couple drivers, a good set of pliers, and a bottle opener ;). And that's exactly what the Skeletool standard and CX multitools offer.

-Carryability-
What makes the Skeletool great isn't the *number* of tools, it's the *versatility* of its few, well thought out tools, allowing for a 5 ounces overall weight, slim form-factor, and not one but two carry clips. The standard side-clip is removable (thought cannot be installed in any other positions on the tool)while the carabiner turns out to be far more useful than I'd imagined -- I find myself hanging it on my belt loop most of the time, keeping my belt free of pouches and my pockets comfortably empty. This negates the need for a holster, though there are versions of the tool which come with one should you desire it.

-The Blade-
Like most modern multitools, the Blade rotates open easily, one-handed, without having to open the tool itself. This is a MUST HAVE feature for an Every Day Carry tool, and feels right at home on the Skeletool. The 2.5 inch blade is a perfectly functional length for everyday use (again, this is an EDC tool, not a survival knife, and anything longer would only make it heavier). The CX model has an upgraded 154CM steel blade and is *reason enough* to choose the CX over the standard model - 154CM is a far better, more modern steel which holds is edge VERY well while providing moderate corrosion resistance and takes nothing more than a good ceramic stone to sharpen.Over the past year I've used it for everything from prying and scraping to box cutting and (in a pinch) cooking, and despite never having sharpened it once the tip is still there (which is saying a lot for my knives) and it's still plenty sharp. The blade's liner lock does a noticeably firm job of holding the blade in place with NO WOBBLE.Quality! When closed, the blade is held in place via a blade-retention bump on the liner lock that mates with one of the skeletonizing holes near the base of the blade. Both Skeletools I've used had a ramp cut into the base of the blade near the joint, automatically depressing the retention-bump and allowing safe closure of the blade. One reviewer has proven that his Skeletool does not have this ramp, forcing him to grind off the bump or risk placing him thumb in danger every time he closed the blade. It is yet unclear as to why his knife didn't get the ramp.

-Half Serrated vs. Full Straight Blade-
NOTE: In mid 2009, Leatherman added half-length blade serrations to standard model and REMOVED them from the CX model. Confusingly, the model numbers were not updated to match the new configurations. Some online retailers may still have the 'old version' still in inventory, but as the model numbers are the same, there's no way of knowing what you'll receive. I contacted Leatherman about this and this is the reply I received:

"Thank you for your email and your interest in Leatherman Tools. Originally our Skeletool had a "straight blade",and the Skeletool CX had a "combo blade".The Skeletool CX has a higher grade of steel in its blade and those in the `knife world' came back to us, and stated that we should not use the combo blade with 154cm material. Therefore, in mid year of last year, we made a design change. ... All Current models of the Skeletool CX now have the straight blade. All current models of the Skeletool have the combo blade. ... There are some retailers out there, who have both in inventory. We did not change the item numbers when we made the blade change. Unfortunately, you will have to just check to see who has what in stock."

-Bit Driver-
This is THE tool to replace them all and one of the reasons the Skeletool can do so much while still being so thin and light. You can carry two double-sided bits with you (one in the driver and one in the spare bit slot).I got the Leatherman 934870 40 Bit Assortment with Nylon Sheath bit kit with my Skeletool and found that the two bits I use most are the [#0 & #3] Philips bit, and the [#1-2 & 3/16] Philips & flat-blade combo bit.I can attack any pretty much any screw-head and pry at anything without risking damage to the blade. The rest of the bits are stowed in my backpack.

One word of warning: make sure your spare bit slot is tight before clipping your Skeletool onto your pack while hiking.A friend of mine had his spare bit fall out!Nothing the aforementioned Leatherman 934870 40 Bit Assortment with Nylon Sheath couldn't replace, but you still might want to bend it a little to tighten it up.Mine was fine, so this may not be a problem for you.

-Pliers-
I admit, the jaws are a little thinner than I'd like, but have so far held up to everything I've thrown at it (including an accident with a Dremmel). It also would have been nice if the integrated wire cutters were a little harder as they developed a little "bump" after nibbling through a particularly tough strip of metal. For a while there was noticeable resistance when closing the pliers, but over time it's worn itself back in.My only lasting complaint is that, despite being so thin (3/16ths" at its widest point) the tip is just a tad too blunt to fit in the AR-15's firing-pin retaining-pin recess. It would have been nice if the "needle-nose" was a bit more "needle" ;)

-Bottle Opener-
A definite nice to have.Am I ashamed to admit this alone gets as much use as the rest of the tools combined?Nah ;)

Also, when I contacted Leatherman about the mid 2009 blade change, I was lucky enough to get a full list of all Skeletool models.Maybe it'll help you, maybe not. Here it is anyway:

Skeletool (Standard) - manufactured with a combo blade after mid '09

Product Description:
Lightweight yet sturdy enough for demanding jobs, the Leatherman 8613140 e55 Straight Blade Knife is a versatile tool that's easy to store in your pocket, pack, or toolbox. A slim, folding knife with a reinforced handle, the e55 is a perfect choice for the rugged minimalist and do-it-yourselfer. Whether you're setting up camp in the wilderness or working on a project in your garage, this precision-crafted Expanse Series knife is packed with design elements that you'll appreciate.
The Leatherman e55 Straight Blade Knife offers:

    Tough, US-made 154CM steel
    A large, 3.1-inch blade
    Lock back design for safety

It's easy to clip Expanse series knives to your gear. View larger.

The e55 is a sleek, dependable folding knife. View larger.

The convenient carabiner doubles as a bottle opener. View larger. Simple, Lightweight, and Reliable
Sometimes, you don't need a multi-tool packed with gadgets or a heavy-duty hunting knife. You just need a strong, sharp, reliable cutting blade. The Expanse Series e55 is a streamlined, folding knife with a sturdy, locking blade. Its 60-percent glass-filled nylon handle is reinforced with stainless steel to provide exceptional durability along with a stylish, contemporary look.
This handle is shaped and balanced to sit comfortably in your hand, whether you're chopping wild onions to flavor a meal or splicing rope on the high seas. And weighing in at just 5.43 ounces, the e55 isn't bulky or awkward in your pocket.
The in-handle storage system means you won't have to carry a sheath, and a folding carabiner clip makes it simple to attach your knife to a belt loop or the side of your pack, so it's always on hand when you need it. Mariners who keep their tools on lines will have a special appreciation for this clip. It also does double-duty as a bottle-opener. You can also opt to secure your knife with the included removable pocket clip.
Premium, US-Made Steel for Performance
A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer, since you're less likely to slip and cut yourself. A good edge means you make the cuts you want to make quickly.
Expanse Series knives are crafted out of US-made 154CM steel from Crucible Metals. 154CM is used because it has exceptional edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Leatherman compared 154CM steel to 420HC, another durable, reliable steel used in knife blades, and found that 154CM holds an edge approximately three times longer. This means your knife will be sharp and ready to use when you reach for it.
When it does come time to sharpen your knife, you'll appreciate that Leatherman knives can be re-sharpened using the standard methods. There are many effective ways to sharpen a knife, so you should be able to find one that works for you. Sharpening stones, round files, and special kits (not included) all provide a nice edge.
Locking, Drop-Style Blade for Safety
A lockback system is used to secure the large, 3.1-inch blade of your Expanse 55 Series knife, so you don't have to worry about it closing on your hand while you cut. This safety feature is especially important when slicing through tough materials like nylon webbing or braided rope. The lockback system is stronger than the liner lock system, which is used on knives with smaller blades. It typically requires two hands to open a lockback knife, encouraging you to use this larger knife safely.
Leatherman uses blades shaped in a drop-style for all their e55 knives because they fit nicely in the handle of your knife when not in use. Plus, a drop-style blade is stronger than a clip point blade, which you might see on other pocket knives. This means you can rely on the e55, whether you're cutting rope to build a litter during a mountain rescue operation or carving your name on a bunk at Scout camp.
About Leatherman: Time-Tested Survival Tools
The original Pocket Survival Tool, devised by mechanical engineer Tim Leatherman, hit the market in 1983. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one million of them a year.
The simple, durable Expanse Series knives draw on Leatherman's legacy. While the e55 knife doesn't feature the signature Leatherman pliers design, it is available in several multi-tool variations. If you work with rope or clean fish often, you might enjoy the versatility offered by the e55x, which has a combination straight and serrated blade. Similarly, Leatherman offers the e55B, a multi-knife with an integrated bit driver, and a full series of e33 knives with smaller blades.
All Leatherman tools, including the e55 Straight Blade Knife, are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Leatherman 934860 Removable Pocket Clip for Kick Review

Leatherman 934860 Removable Pocket Clip for Kick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got one of these so I wouldn't have to wear the sheath everywhere I go. It seems that it would always get hung on something. The only problem that I have with this is that there is a little too much play when it is attached. This isn't a huge problem, because the screw is in tight and it does not affect the way it fits onto your pocket. I like this better than the sheath and it was a good investment....it's a more low-profile carry and does not get in the way. I only wish that LM would have packed a small washer that fits between the clip and screw to solve the play problem...but once again it does not affect how well it clips to your pocket. I also have not had any problem with the tool coming open in my pocket. It does have a pretty good tension and It is held closed by the edge of my pocket..(I wear it on the right side, this could be a problem if worn on your left.) The clip is relatively inexpensive and works as a good alternative where a sheath isn't that practical.

Leatherman 831144 Monarch 500 LED Flashlight, Black Review

Leatherman 831144 Monarch 500 LED Flashlight, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned some pretty decent, pretty expensive lights in my time, this is one helluvva light. What sets this light apart is its relatively inexpensive cost combined with the fact it uses standard batteries to achieve exceptional output. Those batteries I'll add, that have been in my light for over a month now and although I'm not using it constantly I do use it more than the average bear in my line of work. If you're looking for a good bang for your buck, don't want to deal with a rechargeable unit, and need something small(this light fits in one of the pen slots of my vest) and incredibly bright, you might want to consider this before one of the more expensive alternatives. Thanks and good luck.

Leatherman 70108001K Juice C2, Storm Gray, Pocket Multi-Tool Review

Leatherman 70108001K Juice C2, Storm Gray, Pocket Multi-Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Why the Juice C2 -- I got the Juice C2 in gray recently... was attracted to this particular Leatherman since I wanted a smaller multi-tool (near "Swiss Army knife"-sized) that had pliers but that I'd be more likely to carry routinely. Also wanted only those kinds of tools that I'd actually use on an everyday basis. For me, the C2, with its combination of pliers, knife, corkscrew, bottle opener, and variety of screwdrivers was just what I needed and no more.

Size -- To give you a feel for size, the C2 is the width two small pocket knifes and finger-length/thickness -- put your two middle fingers together and you'll peg the overall size pretty closely. Plier handles are just long enough to wrap 4 fingers around them for good leverage.

Appearance -- The gray color seems to be a durable coating that is unlikely to show nicks and scratches."Leatherman" and "juice C2" are lightly embossed in white on opposite sides of the tool faces.

Mechanism -- The action of the tools is superb, with the plier-handles snapping into place with a resounding click for example (as do all the screwdrivers as well). When closing the pliers the two halves of the tool snap together -- no need to compress each side together by manually squeezing the tool closed. There are fingernail hooks to get the screwdriver blades out.Only difficulty I've had is extracting the lanyard loop (which is something that you'd presumably leave either out or in semi-permanently).Knife blade comes to a very thin sharp point, which might be brittle if used to pry something open using the dull side (should probably use a screwdriver blade instead).Corkscrew diameter is a bit on the small side but with the "assist" (end of the can/bottle opener serves as a bottle-top prop for the corkscrew)) I believe it will be possible to ease out even the driest of corks.Needlenose section of the pliers is perfectly aligned with hairline precision at the tip.

Overall this multi-tool exceeded my high expectations for the Leatherman brand and if it weren't for the 25 year warranty I'd probably buy a second one as a backup.

LEATHERMAN Wave - Pocket Survival Tool Review

LEATHERMAN Wave - Pocket Survival Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both the Wave and PST II.Whenever I am doing a job I like to use the Wave because it is stronger and has more tools. The three locking blades and file are accessible without unfolding the tool. The rounded edges on the handle are much more comfortable when using the pliers.

The Wave is a little bigger and heavier than the PST II, so I tend to leave it off my belt for everyday use in favor of the PST II, but if it was the only one I had, I'd happily wear it everywhere.

The knife blades, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, strippers, and especially the scissors are very convenient, handy, and work well.Since the blades are independent of the other tools (and they lock), this is a safer tool than some of the other Leatherman wannabe's.

My only complaint, and this covers the Wave and PST II, is the can opener. For some reason they make it thick and put the bevel on the wrong side (at least if you are right-handed and cut turning CW).It works, but it makes a sloppy cut.I like the can opener on my Swiss Army knife much better.

I had to use the warranty once and it was a quick and totally satisfying experience.I broke the pliers and they replaced the tool with a brand new one (PST II).Don't waste your money on a cheap knock-off.In my opinion, you can't go wrong with a Leatherman. They are very well built and worth the money.

Gerber 22-41770 Artifact Pocket Keychain Tool Review

Gerber 22-41770 Artifact Pocket Keychain Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SAVE THE THUMBS. I love my Gerber Artifact tool, but there's one issue. The blade arm is difficult to swing out from its safety position for use. After weeks of daily use, I learned the hard way and sliced my thumb to the bone trying to open it. As I type this, my thumb is hovering unused and bandaged over the keyboard. Since then, I think I've figured out a safe way to open the blade arm and I wanted to share it to try to spare the thumbs of others -- use a coin to pry the blade arm out from its safety position. A quarter fits perfectly in the slot near the key chain loop on the tool. Stay safe.
