Leatherman 70202003 Juice S2 Review

Leatherman 70202003 Juice S2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely a step in the right direction. The Juice line tries to cut a demographic swath beyond the traditional tool geek, outdoor enthusiast. Here they go for the younger urban dweller.
Biggest plus is that these hit the sweet spot between the 2 ounce Micras, SOGs, Kutmasters and the 8 ounce sheath models.Over time, hopefully big enough to take on certain tasks yet small enough to carry in my pocket or backpack. It's only going to be of use to me if I carry it and I'm only carrying it if I don't have to wear it.
The primary way Leatherman misses the mark is by persisting with the flathead drivers.Particularly if you are targeting a young, urban market which probably rents rather than owns, what do they have?Computers, electronics, Ikea furniture, bikes, spiffy appliances -- and not a flat head screw is used to assemble almost any of these things.I have a set of Stanley screwdrivers at the house.I can count on one hand the number of times I've needed to grab a flathead over the course of 10+ years.I know it is different for many people but not everyone owns a house or works on a car. That doesn't mean they don't have need for other tools. This is a problem not merely with the S2 but with the entire multitool market.Bewildering.
Other quibbles are down to personal preference. One person wants a corkscrew, another thinks it's needless. This goes on ad nauseaum. But, for myself, add tweezers and a metal file (not a nail cleaner but a REAL file), drop one of the flatheads for a larger Philips and the thing would be on the mark.Tweezers on a larger tool body are unwieldy but given the conditions under which I may use this thing I still think it would be better than nothing.
However, given that I can't have exactly what I want it seems better to me to carry something that's missing a few things rather than something that throws a few more in and makes me lug it all around. The S2 gets high marks for an OK tool set, good construction, terrific weight and dimensions.

MAGLITE XL100 LED Flashlight, Black Review

MAGLITE XL100 LED Flashlight, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For awhile I had forsaken MagLite as outdated and incapable of adapting to a changing market, with new flashlight manufacturers making brighter lights every few months, it seemed they were doomed. Up to this point I wouldn't even consider a flashlight unless it had high lumens, multiple modes and the ability to accept a wide range of batteries, including lithium ions, until I came upon this little gem.

Being a flashaholic "know it all" I was hesitant to give this mag a chance, I mean, a three cell carrier AAA light? Practically sacrilege! But being a bit of a techno nerd, the opportunity to play with an accelerometer operated light was irresistible. Plus I could always just return it to the store... ***SPOILER AHEAD***... but I didn't.

Now to get down to the blood & bone... this light really impressed me especially that it came from MagLite. The features themselves are standard among the usual suspects of LED lights, but the implementation MagLite chose is a leap forward among their peers. Every multi-mode light out there requires you to loosen, tighten or certain amount of clicks, or a certain combination sequence of either to get to the mode you want. The XL100 has all its modes in one button you only need to press once, as long as your selection is facing up. A raised rubber dial (It does NOT rotate!) on the boot of the switch is supposed to serve as an indicator, the big N on a map so to speak, always pointing to the most frequently used mode of the light, the brightness control. And serving as a reference point to other modes while in the dark, providing you can memorize the other 4's orientation.

However, the mode you'll find yourself using most is the brightness control, which is the coolest part of this light. Once you press & hold the button, it's a simple twist of the wrist to dim or brighten the light, release at the desired level and it memorizes the setting the next time it's turned on. It also dims & brightens as fast as you can twist. Most lights that offer this type of adjustment do so at a fixed, slow rate. The low setting is VERY dim, and the brightest setting is absolutely brighter than 83 lumens. At least by the measure of lumens I'm used to from the popular Chinese LED flashlight brands.

The modes can be directly accessed; SoS & Strobe are easily adjusted for brightness or frequency in the same manner. Brightness of the strobe will default to the last used level, but the frequency can be adjusted to whatever interval you desire simply by twisting your wrist. SoS is adjustable for brightness, but not frequency (wouldn't be SoS then, I guess.)

Nightlite mode is a neat little feature that will probably get more use than strobe or SoS, especially with kids. The light can tail stand and while in Nightlite mode will dim down to the lowest setting when no movement is detected, but instantly go to full brightness once picked up.

Signal mode doesn't get used much by me, but basically the light will be off and turn on at the last used setting when any movement is detected in the direction away from Signal. Personally I find that signaling by clicking on and off to be easier, but the motion detect feature of signal mode could come in handy somehow, somewhere in a galaxy far away...

The emitter the XL100 uses is in fact a LUXEON REBEL, not a Cree. It also appears to be a neutral white, a pleasant alternative on my eyes in contrast to the cool white of most Cree LEDs (one of the most common emitters.) The electronics in this light are also regulated; it is NOT a direct drive like almost every other three cell battery carrier light out there. It uses a BUCK BOOST circuit, which offers nice regulation and long usable output of light. I have no doubt the ANSI specified numbers on the package are equal or lower than what this light is actually capable of delivering. And have no fear of using lithium batteries, the manual doesn't prohibit them, only rechargeables, but they are SAFE to use in a buck boost too. Mag probably prohibits them for legal liability reasons; rechargeable batteries always carry more risk.

Also the battery carrier is much higher quality than any other carrier type I've encountered, its not the malleable cheapie plastic, but a firmer, denser type of plastic which I have no doubt will last, but if it fails, a replacement is a call away.

Heat sinking on this light also seems to be about as good as my other LEDs, the body does get warm after being at full brightness for several minutes, but that means heat is being transferred to the aluminum body and not insulated within the electronics of the emitter. A problem Mag had with their first attempt at LED'izing their Mag line. And it doesn't get too hot to hold, even after a full hour at full brightness on eneloop batteries.

Fit & finish of the light is pretty standard MagLite quality, typical Type II anodizing (which many flashaholics lament in favor of Type III. It's a higher number after all, right?!), highly polished aluminum body underneath, and anodized threads for long lasting use. The finish is more durable than expected, not tough enough to withstand criticism though, I have had Type III finish lights arrive with nicks out of the box, it may be Type III, but if it's poorly applied it doesn't mean a thing. MagLite does Type II well and I have yet to knick this light in spite of dropping it twice already and knocking it against hard objects accidentally. Body tube is of good thickness, but the head of the flashlight is fairly thin, the lens is also plastic, but that just means it won't crack as easily, but will scratch. My old d cell mag is scratched to hell, but it still puts out a usable beam, and mag will gladly send you a replacement any time if you call and request one. Can't say the same of Chinese brands. The rubber clickie boot is also of good quality rubber, and the switch itself feels more durable than the click switches on my more expensive lights.

About the only gripes I have for this light is that it does not have a pocket clip or lanyard attachment, big oversight on Mags part. However, if you're an inclined tinkerer/customizer, there is a very fast and easy remedy. I've found that the Novatac lanyard ring will fit over the tail cap of the XL100 perfectly and allows for the attachment of a lanyard (shown under customer images I've uploaded.) The Novatac flashlight clip will also fit in a similar fashion, both available from Lighthound (FANTASTIC SERVICE!!) Or just about any generic lanyard ring made for a 1" light will work. I have also found that any pistol magazine pouch will fit this light, or for something a little more specific, the Maxpedition 4" flashlight pouch fits this light perfectly, I use it. MagLite apparently has one in the works for this light, but you don't have to wait! Also, the focusing feature on the head of this light is bland; it goes from tight beam to a loose spill which washes out much of the light in favor of a barely usable flood. Not worth using, imo.

Finally, in comparison to my Maratac 9290 (a re-badged ACU anodized iTP C7 tactical) using a 14500 lithium ion battery, rated at 190 lumens -the MagXL100, using eneloop AAA's is perceptibly (slightly) brighter and throws its beam farther. It throws almost as good as my Fenix TK12 using an 18650 li-ion, at 220 lumens, and only slightly dimmer than the TK, yet the beam is cleaner, no dark "cree rings" affecting the spill, its very clean in fact. Yet you still won't find many flashaholics praising this light, it is MagLite and an AAA three cell carrier light designed for "clueless consumers" after all. I also have many other LED's, but they are of lower brightness and no comparison to the XL100 and not worth noting here.

I don't have any graphs to display or have the desire to purchase equipment & software solely for the use of grading lights and measuring every electronic function by the numbers down to an exact science, my eyes are my best & most practical gauge of usability and what they tell me is that there is little difference in brightness between an $80 dollar 200 lumen light and this 83 lumen $30 light with a stellar lifetime warranty.

Real world use of the light for me has been solid and satisfying, the fact that price was affordable, and it's made in the US by a well respected manufacturer with a notable lifetime warranty & service is a nice bonus, too.

I have been using this light nightly for the past two months and it is still going strong. It has become my fast favorite and now sits in my dresser drawer near my bed and is now the first light I go to when I need it, feels just right in my hands.

By now I'd be a few hundred dollars richer had I never got caught up in this silly flashlight hobby, searching for the "best light for me," but now that I've found it, I can stop spending ridiculous amounts of money on other brands that seem to come out with something new every couple of months and give you that "!!!MUST BUY!!!" feeling because you think it might be better, but truth is the improvements are incremental at best and I feel like a rube every time I plop down $60 or more for the latest and greatest. No more!

I can see now why established companies like SureFire, MagLite & others don't come out with new product very often, because when they do, they tend to do so when the technology provides a significant advance in quality & features, not just baby steps.

I hope I've covered all the bases and provided as much insight into the XL100 and what a great bargain it is, at least in my view. I've tried to be as concise as possible, but review writing isn't my thing unless the product really is of remark to me. If you can learn from my experience, and you value practicality & having lots of money in the bank, then this IS THE FLASHLIGHT for you.

Also, if you've taken the time to read my whole view, THANK YOU!!! I put at least a couple hours into it... any questions I'd be glad to answer!

Great Neck 53105 Cool Little Tools 12-in-1 Mini Multi Tool Review

Great Neck 53105 Cool Little Tools 12-in-1 Mini Multi Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given that this product was under $10 dollars, I'm pretty happy with the quality of the metal and hinges and such. The PRO's and CON's I'm listing below are not considering the price tag, they are unbiased observations.

PRO:

- Tight fit for all the tools it packs (more than most keychain pliers)
- ACTUAL Philips head screw driver rather than flat imitator (small, somewhere around a PH0)
- Sharp little blade once you give it a pass or two on a stone
- Good sharp scissors for cutting paper or thread (but nothing too serious)

CON:

- There is some very minor movement in the plier hinge that at times keeps the tips from precisely matching up
- The bottle opener and can opener are too small to do you any good
- The medium and large flatheads are basically the same size (medium)
- If you plan to use the keychain, you 'll need to remove it to access the knife

Overall, it's useful to have pliers and some screw drivers handy (if not, Leatherman would have gone under by now), but don't expect this to be a one-stop package for all the tools you'd want in your pocket.

We gave this knife to our son for Christmas several years ago.Although he didn't admit it at that time, he didn't think he'd use it much.In reality, however, it soon became a prized possession! He can't even count how many times he has used (or allowed other people to borrow) the knife because of the various useful tools it contains. It always seems to have the right thing at the right time for all kinds of expected and unexpected tasks.Quality workmanship and super-easy-to-carry size!

Swiss Tech MPTBS Micro-Plus 8-in-1 Polished Stainless Steel Key Ring Multi-Tool, Gift Box Review

Swiss Tech MPTBS Micro-Plus 8-in-1 Polished Stainless Steel Key Ring Multi-Tool, Gift Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item because I've been looking for a keychain that is unique and in this case, useful. The product is not that shiny as compared to the one you see in the picture here. It is stainless and feels really sturdy when you are trying to 'transform' it into a screw driver and/or pliers. I tried unscrewing a big screw in my apartment using the big philips screw driver head and I was surprised on how fast I was able to unscrew everything, I under-estimated how strong this product is. The grip of the pliers is also very good, you won't see a gap in any of the teeth when closed. Once the drivers are folded in, there is no way this thing would get loose from your key ring. The hinges are strong and you need some amount of force to be able to fold out/in the drivers.

Very satisfied with the product. Exactly the size I'm looking for as a keychain (about the size of my thumb, 1 inch by 2 inches when folded) and tools are very useful and as strong as regular size drivers. Of course, you don't expect it to be as comfortable as regular sized tools but you still get the job done when the only thing you have in your pocket is this little thing. Works for me! I always have those instances when I encounter stuff and think to myself, if only I have a screw driver or pliers with me.

Comes in a really nice small metal case (just like the ones where they put mint candies in), I wouldn't mind if it was in a blister pack (which would have made it cheaper) but the case would be better if you plan to give this to someone as a gift (that's why they call it gift box in the title :D). There is foam padding inside the case where this item is fitted snuggly and a lifetime warranty paper. Yes, lifetime warranty against any defects not caused by wear and tear, the usual.

You can't compare this with the likes of victorinox, leatherman, gerber, etc. Size wise, this beats all of them. As mentioned, I review this thing as a very useful and unique keychain and not as a pocket tool. It just so happens that this thing functions as a plier and screw driver on top of being a keychain.

I hope this thing is allowed through airports and other high security areas as I see no reason why, no knife/blade in the product, just like I wanted.

Leatherman 67010103H Wave Review

Leatherman 67010103H Wave
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm using multi tools since the day they were invented. And if they haven't been invented I would have to do it my self so thank you Mr. Leatherman. I never liked Leatherman products because plier's handles were pinching my hands (original tool). For a while I wondered of and bought into Gerber family than Shrade and Swiss Army. After multiple failures I decided to give Leatherman Wave a tryand I'm not disappointed. So here we go:
Strengths:
- Comfortable handles even if using pliers to tight down the nastiest nuts and bolts.
- One hand operation for knife use. Life saver in many situations.
- Locking saw, file and serrated/regular knife blades. Not for nothing but it will save you fingers.
- Wide choice of tools at your finger tips. Can opener/bottle opener is there!!!! I can't believe that some of the tools come without it.
- Strong pliers and good wire cutters.
- Spring loaded scissors.
- Screwdriver tool attachment
- Blade stays sharp.
Weaknesses:
- Tools are not secured in place. The lock is spring loaded (the same one as blades on regular Swiss army knife) there is a danger of a tool folding down on you. Not a problem for regular everyday jobs but if you have a tight/rusty screw watch out.
- Not rust proof. I use it on the river and if it wasn't for regular maintenance and WD40 my tool would be a history.
- Wire cutters even if sharp are made out of soft steel so when faced with tough wire they will become dull or even bend.
Ok so why 5 stars? Just because it's the best tool made so far. There is nothing better made out there. Yes it has its problems and some design flows but in comparison to hundreds of similar products available out there this one really stands out. My Wave was stolen in Africa and while looking for replacement I tested multiple tools of similar shape and purposes but guess what? I'm back with the Wave again.

Striker OO105 Magnetic LED Light-Mine Review

I love the concept of this little light. However, a cheap plastic switch kills the reliability.I switched mine on, it worked.Switched it off, then switched it on again.Dead! The light will only stay on if I apply constant pressure on the switch.I was excited to receive this product but was immediately disappointed.Product lifetime = less than one minute.

I give the product a 2nd star only because the company, Risk Racing/Striker, was willing to send me a new unit without requiring that I send back the bad one. I look forward to receiving the replacement, but even so, I have doubts about the durability of this product and its reliability in a rough environment.

I guess you can't ask for much, given the price.Honestly, it is such a unique and cool concept that I would have spent more than double the $7 I spent to own a unit that is more dependable.

Leatherman 74204003 Juice CS4 Review

Leatherman 74204003 Juice CS4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WOW! This is an absolutely extraordinary tool. There is no question that I would have to rank it not only as the best pocket knife I've ever used (by a country mile), but also as a definite contender for "product of the year" across categories. I'm the kind of guy who always carries a pocket knife in my back pocket; I've done so for several decades, and have been through virtually every one of the Swiss Army varieties, plus a couple of Leatherman Micras. Since I'm not working on cars or using this as an industrial tool, there's no way that I could (or would want to) fit a full-size Leatherman Wave into my pants pocket. I liked all the tools on the Swiss Army knives, and loved the size, quality and flexibility of the Micra. But then...
...ahh! I came across a Juice display at a retail store, and it was love at first sight! The Juice CS4 is, to my mind, the absolutely ideal combination of size, style, tools, build-quality and functionality that I have ever seen, and without a close second. Let's step through it:
The packageis bigger than a Micra, but much smaller than a full-size Leatherman; about the size of a medium-large penknife. The color is cool blue, which I happen to find quite attractive. The tools are everything you'd expect, and then some. There's an open-spiral corkscrew (the best kind), which actually has an "assist", just like a professional bartender's folding corkscrew. I have *never* seen this on any other pocketknife. The primary fold-out tool is a gorgeous pair of needlenose pliers with wire cutters (unlike the Micra, which only has a scissors), but it ALSO has a strong fold-out scissors on the side. NEAT!
Let's keep going! When it comes to screwdrivers, you just can't beat this thing: it has small, medium and large flat-heads, plus a Phillips (not a dinky flat one, but a real, 3-D one) and best of all, every one of these blades flips out from the center, allowing you to re-close the handles and have a superbly balanced, correctly proportioned, long-handled screwdriver; the best I've ever seen, without question. But don't stop there. This thing has a saw, a can/bottle opener, and an awl with sewing eye.
And a knife! A nice, loooong one that is the sharpest I have ever seen on a pocket tool. It has a solid, tapered blade that cuts through stuff like butter, making it a joy to use.
I realize, on re-reading what I've written so far, that it must sound as though I've gone off my rocker (or work for Leatherman, which, of course, I don't). I really am aware that one just isn't supposed to have feelings like this about a pocketknife! But all I can say is that I simply adore this tool, carry it with me 24/7, and wouldn't trade it for anything. It is simply the finest combination/compromise on size, style and functionality that you will find in a pocket tool (including the rest of the Juice line). It is more costly than most, but without question worth the price. Trust me on this [grin].

I really like this Leatherman.Lots of tools in a small form factor. It's a handy device to have around when when doing small jobs so you're not reaching for the toolbox all the time.I also got the leather belt clip to be used with this tool which is a great addition as the tool can fit in it folded or opened to the pliers position.

AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener Review

AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener

This is a tremendous invention! I was a pro chef for about 15 years.
The customary way to sharpen knifes was a steel and or flat stone.
I have bought and used various "sharpening systems" and had ex-
pensive electric diamond sharpeners. However, this device is the
fastest, cheapest, and best one I have ever used. It puts a very
sharp edge on all knives (almost razor sharp), and sharper than any
$300 electric sharpener out there. And for the average 8" chefs knife,
takes about 20 seconds! Get one of these and you will be amazed
how something so simple works so well.

Product Description:
Versatile and easy enough for anyone to use safely, the AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener lets you quickly sharpen a wide variety of bladed tools, from straight and serrated knives to cleavers and axes. Its unique, ergonomic design guards your fingers while a dependable, diamond-honed tungsten carbide blade puts a precision edge on your tools.
The AccuSharp 001
Knife Sharpener offers:

    Speed, safety, and precision
    A full-length finger guard
An ergonomic handle for right- or left-handed sharpening
5 to 10 years of use between blade changes

The tough, tungsten carbide blades are reversible and replaceable. View larger.

This sharpener can even handle serrated knives, making it a perfect pick for kitchens. View larger.

This verstile AccuSharp sharpener is also ideal for sportsmen and craftspeople. View larger.
Versatile, User-Friendly Design
A sharp blade makes it easier to get work done quickly and safely. The innovative AccuSharp Knife Sharpener lets you sharpen most blades in around ten seconds. Sharpening is oil- and mess-free, and it doesn't require guessing at angles or handling rough, awkward stones. This sharpener's easy-to-use design makes it a great tool to have on hand in professional and personal kitchens, as well as an easy choice for hunters, fishermen and women, gardeners, and craftspeople.
Featuring a unique, ergonomic handle, the AccuSharp fits neatly in either hand to accommodate both right- and left-handed users, and it includes a full-length guard that protects your fingers throughout the sharpening process.
Fast, Effective Sharpening
To get started sharpening, you simply place your knife on a table or counter top with the cutting edge up. Hold the knife handle securely with one hand. Then let the "V" notch on the sharpener straddle the blade, and use your thumb to apply light pressure as you draw the AccuSharp down past the point of the blade.
When you first use the AccuSharp on a blade, several passes may be required to make sure that your knife's cutting angle conforms to the AccuSharp angle. But once that angle is achieved the first time, it should take just two or three brief passes to put a sharp edge back on your knife--which means that sharpening fits into your busy schedule instead of interfering with it.
Dependable, Long-Lasting Construction
To deliver years of reliable use, AccuSharp sharpening blades are crafted from diamond-honed tungsten carbide, one of the hardest known materials. And because even the toughest industrial-quality blades eventually begin to show wear, AccuSharp's unique design allows you to reverse the blade to double its life span. Most users report an average of five to 10 years between blade replacements, which means that it's easy to ensure that your sharpener will be ready to go when you need it.
AccuSharp Knife Sharpeners will not rust, and they can be cleaned easily with soap and water or in your dishwasher.

Leatherman 67070203G Wave 20TH Anniversary Model with Black Nylon Sheath Review

Leatherman 67070203G Wave 20TH Anniversary Model with Black Nylon Sheath

I have both the swiss tool x and the leatherman wave. They both are great tools but I perfer my wave for some simple reasons.
1.)SIZE:the wave is considerably smaller than the swiss tool in every dimension and since I carry mine on my belt at all times size is a factor. The wave seems to be lighter too but I don't know by how much.
2.)LINEAR LOCK BLADES:I don't like the locking mechanism on the swiss tool, it seems like it will give out one day.The linear locks on the wave are rock solid.
3.)GREAT KNIVES:I perfer the knives on the wave to the swiss tool.I use the knives more than any other part of the tool and being able to open them one-handed is a must for me.The knives on the wave seem stronger than the swiss tool as well and are thicker.
4.)DESIGN:It isn't a big factor but the truth is that the wave looks so much better than the clunky swiss tool (especially the 20th anniversary, which I own.)It is more comfortable to hold due to the smooth contour.
Like I said before the swiss tool is a great tool as well and I use mine all the time, but for a tool to keep on my belt at all times I go with the wave.

Leatherman 830555 Hybrid Gardening Multitool with Nylon Sheath Review

Leatherman 830555 Hybrid Gardening Multitool with Nylon Sheath

I bought one of these for my fiancee, who is the gardener type.I bought it so she would stop absconding with my pocket knife, and so far my plan has worked nicely.I'm no conoisseur of bypass pruners, but these seem well-constructed and plenty sharp. The tools are typical Leatherman steel, which is to say adequate unto the task.

I strongly prefer locking knives, and this one doesn't.That's a bummer, particularly with the saw.I've also become very accustomed to having access to the knife blades on the outside of the tool (the way the Wave and Charge are designed) but I think that would have made this tool too bulky and unwieldy. As it is, it's a big tool...noticeably larger than my Charge. The handles are comfortable enough, with nice injection-molded rubber inserts.

The sheath is great. There's a metal pocket clip, and a nylon belt slot. The tool can be stored either folded, or in pruner-mode, which is a very nice touch.

Well made, well designed, well-conceived.Despite my quibbles, the lady is a happy gardener, and my pocket knife is way less muddy.Mission accomplished.
