Leatherman 78105003 Juic+B15976e XE6 Pocket Multitool Review

Leatherman 78105003 Juic+B15976e XE6 Pocket Multitool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Leatherman Juice XE6 is at best a compromise, at worst a bit of disappointment. I have used mine for about 6 months now and most of the time it serves me very well but there are some elements of the design that make me search for different tool to do a job I ought to be able to do with the XE6. I'll list the things that annoy me, anything I don't mention you can assume lives up to the claims in the promotional literature.
First off, the pliers: The jaw design is functional and the jaws seem pretty tough but you'll not get to push them to their limit since the axle they are mounted on doesn't seem up to the job. When you squeeze hard on the handles they flex slightly where they join the jaws. This means when you squeeze the pliers on something thin the handles touch together in the middle (specifically the top of the file and the top of the saw make contact). Often when gripping small things I want to squeeze the handles harder to get a better grip, but it doesn't achieve much because I am already making the handles touch in the middle and also I'm scared of damaging the mounting of the jaws.
Second the scissors: They are sharp but some element in the design means they don't cut very well towards the tip of the blade, even when cutting easy things like thin paper. I think the blades simply meet at an angle too close to parallel, in essence they have tried to incorporate too much blade into the short length and not made the handle long enough. The scissors on standard Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are better.
Third the corkscrew: This is a bit of a joke really, the levering `assist' mechanism puts pressure on the top of a wine bottle using a single edge of metal about a millimeter thick. I used this for a while but after it cracked lumps of glass off the top of a couple of bottles I gave up and resorted to brute force and pulling the corks out using the screw alone. Being used to removing corks in this manner using a Swiss army knife I don't find the level of force needed much of a problem, but there are further faults with the Leatherman's corkscrew; the screw itself is quite short and narrow, it works fine on artificial corks but it often tears traditional corks in half leaving the other end still in the neck of the bottle.
Lastly a minor point on ergonomics: The screwdriver blades are made to be levered out with your thumbnail. The length of the screwdriver blades means that if you lever one out quickly with your thumb the end of the driver is likely to make quite hard contact with the flesh of your thumb just below the nail. The screw driver blades are sharp enough to cut you quite easily. I have got used to opening the screw drivers without cutting myself but believe me, if you use one you will likely suffer the same minor injuries at some point during use.
This may read like a rather scathing review but bare in mind I have only mentioned the things that disappointed me. Just about everything else is great. The blades are great the file and saw are great. The screw drivers are very high quality. Everything is bundled together into a very compact package and very attractively finished. When closed all the lines and edges are smooth making the tool suitable for carrying in a pocket or bag. There are some very nice touches to the design like a series of small ridges near the base on the back of the serrated blade so you can identify which blade is which without opening them.
Overall I am still pleased with the tool, but I was disappointed by the week feeling pliers and the scissors that are frankly just badly designed.

Maglite Mini Maglite/Pocket Knife Leather Holster Review

Maglite Mini Maglite/Pocket Knife Leather Holster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Leatherman Surge, and a 2xAA MagLite in this case. It is a SUPER well made case. The Leatherman fits in perfectly, it does take a few days to stretch the leather a bit to get it in and out well - but that's what ya want. The MagLite fits perfectly, and there is a hole at the bottom of the flashlight part, so I assume a three cell MagLite would fit as well. (I think they had those at one time right?)

The flashlight side probably won't hold anything but a MagLite. I tried a few other lights just out of curiosity, but, no dice.

The only reason I didn't give this a five star rating... The snaps on the belt loop. They are very well made, and they do snap well. However, this thing would un-snap every time I sat down. I got pissed at it after 3 days and broke out the gorilla glue. I simply glued the two snaps, and ran a bead of glue between them for a little extra staying power. I put some weights on it, and let it dry for 24 hours. Now I just put the assembly on as I put my belt on, and it is fantastic. I suppose they put snaps on, thinking you may take it on and off a lot. I don't, I use my Leatherman as much as a pen some days.

Gerber 22-41022 Obsidian Serrated Edge Knife With Screwdriver and Bottle Opener Review

Gerber 22-41022 Obsidian Serrated Edge Knife With Screwdriver and Bottle Opener
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After some shopping around for a pocket knife with the "essential" tools, I decided to go for the Gerber Obsidian. The full-blown multi-tools have more than I really need; a knife with both Philips and flat screwdrivers covers 90% of my on-the-go tool needs.I think a tool that's a knife first also results in better overall ergonomics.

Pros:
1. Sturdy, well made.Everything from the knife to the screwdrivers to the pocket clip is beefy and solid.I don't expect it to break. If it does, it's covered by Gerber's lifetime warranty.

2. Ambidextrous, mostly.I'm left-handed and have no trouble with quick one-handed opening and closing of the blade with either hand using the thumb stud.I said "mostly" because the pocket clip, plunger, and safety slide are really positioned for the right-handed person. If you want to operate the blade quickly out of your left pocket, it's not going to work because the pocket clip won't orient it properly on your left side. It's perfectly oriented for that kind of access from the right pocket.

3. I like the plunger lock better than the liner lock on the comparable Leatherman models. With a liner lock, you have to put your thumb in the path of the closing blade which would seem to make one-handed closing tenuous at best. With the plunger lock, I can safely close the blade with one hand, left or right.

4. Speaking of the comparable Leatherman models, the Obsidian feels rather thin in comparison.I don't have the thickness of the Leatherman, but having handled one in a store it just felt too thick. The Obsidian is about 5/8" at the thickest part, not including the pocket clip.

5. It feels pretty light in my pocket.

6. The safety slide is a pretty good idea.It just prevents depressing the plunger and accidentally releasing the blade onto your hand. That can happen with a normal grip.I already had one occasion where I inadvertently pressed the plunger.Nothing bad happened, but I think I'll use the safety.Maybe. :)

7. Obviously, I like the mix of tools. There's also a file on the side of the Philips screwdriver and a bottle opener on the flat screwdriver.

Cons:
1. The nylon part of the handle is too smooth.Fortunately the ergonomics of the handle shape provide a good grip, but a deeper waffle pattern would be an improvement.

2. Careful, the screwdrivers don't lock. It'd probably add weight to add that, and then I'd probably say it's too heavy. :)

3. The knife isn't as sharp as I expected.I have a Gerber Ultralight LST, and it's awesome sharp.I'm sure the Obsidian will sharpen to that level, but I really think it should have come that way.To be fair, the serrated edge is really sharp.I can't comment on how well it will hold its edge.(See the update below.)

I'm happy with my choice of a knife over a multi-tool, and with the Obsidian.I have no problem recommending it.

Update:I've had this knife for a few weeks now and want to note that I haven't been able to sharpen the blade to anywhere near as sharp as my little Gerber Ultralight (which I've never even needed to sharpen). And after I sharpen it (with a diamond sharpener block), the edge seems to dull quickly. Now I'm not a sharpening expert, so maybe I'm doing a poor job at it, but it should have come from the factory a lot sharper than it did.So I'll just keep trying to sharpen this one until the steel is gone.Maybe by then there will be an alternative besides the comparable Leatherman knives (with the scary liner lock and the uncomfortably oversized width) that do not interest me at all.

Columbia River Knife and Tool 9070 Guppie Black and Grey Multitool Review

Columbia River Knife and Tool 9070 Guppie Black and Grey Multitool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Guppie is an almost useful tool, but falls short. The crescent wrench portion does not open very far (1/2") and so is useful for smaller nuts only.It also has a lot of play in it so that it wobbles and has to be held in tension re adjusted constantly to use.The screwdriver portion is OK but can't get into tight spaces as the bits are quite short. The knife appears to be acceptable but I have not used it much to see how long it will hold an edge. The little built in LED flashlight could be useful, I don't know how long it will run on the small battery, but for emergency repair it puts out a reasonable amount of light and is magnetic, so it could be stuck to something metal while you tighten a loose bolt.
In summary, it is cute, but could be better made, especially the wrench.

Average Reviews:

I owned a few multi-tools in my life.I had the compact Swiss army knife, Leatherman micra, and other Asian made models with similar functions.I have to say - THIS IS THE BEST COMPACT MULTI-TOOL on the market. Why?First of all, it is extremely small. Most other compact tools require you to attach them to your keychain, regardless of their design, they will always get in the way of your keys, your car remote .. etc. This thing IS A KEY on your keychain. It coexists with other keys, does not takes up space in your jeans.I work warehouse, and this tool is always a life saver.Opening boxes, cut tapes, bundles, industrial shrink wrap ... I mean I use almost everyday for 6 month, and it is still just as sharp. What else do you want from a $10 tool?

If you want a minimalistic compact multi-tool, this is the one you want.Highly recommended!

Squirt P4, Storm Gray Review

Squirt P4, Storm Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Introduction:
After having my Squirt P4 for 8 more months, I thought that I would post a follow-up to my previous review.
Good things:
After carrying it on a daily basis for 8+ months, all the tools still have their snug fit. They haven't loosened up at all, and that's a good thing. The pliers/wirecutters have been tremendously useful; it's hard to believe the number of small chores you find to do when you always have a mini-pliers available. And the blade has retained its sharpness well.
Bad things:
Two points here. The gray anodization has begun to chip off along the edges, but considering that I have been carrying it in my pocket rubbing up against my keys, it's not too bad. And because of its size, the bottle opener requires some care to remove bottle caps.
Conclusion:
I still highly recommend this tool.

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools E37S-K Seal Pup Elite Straight Knife with Kydex Sheath, Black TiNi Review

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools E37S-K Seal Pup Elite Straight Knife with Kydex Sheath, Black TiNi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What can I say? This is a great knife for the cost! The pup elite is a beefed up version of the pup, and well worth the slight increase in price.Fixed blade, full tang, AUS 8 steel (decent toughness and edge-holding), decent handle, decently sized blade. The knife handles great, and I am satisfied with it.

Although I haven't used it extensively yet (as in "drop me off in the middle of the jungle" use), I'd say it'd would work well enough in a survival situation. I purchased the straight edge for my belt knife, since there aren't enough serrations to make them really useful. So far it's handled everything I've thrown at it.

The nylon sheath provided is great if you want to carry a leatherman or SAK as well.I've fit a SAK Rucksack or a Leatherman Wave in there. The kydex sheath (sold separately) is a better sheath if you're looking for easy deployment, smaller size, and more rigging options. The knife is slightly easier to unsheathe one-handed and quickly from the kydex sheath, but it really doesn't take much more effort using the nylon one.My pup used to rattle slightly in the kydex sheathe, but I've made adjustments to the sheath and it rattles no more (see sog site for sheath adjustment).

Overall, decent knife.Sure it's not a Fallkniven, Busse, RAT, or BRKT...but for the price, it's not too shabby. But then again, if you're interested in a cheap survival knife, you could always go get a Mora....

Additionally, the self-draining scabbard has a friction fit and a back-up nylon strap for extra security.
Cryogenic Heat Treatment and TiNi Coating Guarantee a Sharp, Durable Blade
The E37S-K offers a full, 4.85-inch, AUS8 stainless steel blade that has undergone SOG's patented Cryogenic Heat Treatment process, which ensures that this blade will stay sharp over the long haul. This intensive process takes more than 48 hours and involves slowly reducing the blade's temperature to less than -300 degrees Fahrenheit, then slowly heating the blade to room temperature. The stress created by this process strengthens the steel on an atomic level and increases the blade's overall durability and edge retention.
In addition to having undergone the Cryogenic Heat Treatment Process, this knife is coated in proprietary titanium nitride (TiNi), of the toughest coatings that can be applied to steel. TiNi boasts extreme hardness, is exceptionally scratch and peel resistant, and helps increase steel's longevity.
Ergonomic, Lightweight Design Ensures Years of Effortless Use
Even if your blade is sharp, it's hard to make precise cuts if your knife doesn't fit comfortably in your hand. That's why this knife's handle is ergonomically contoured. Crafted from tough, glass-reinforced Zytel, the textured handle is also slip-free and well-balanced. Other ergonomic features include deep finger grooves and a blade spine rasp for easy notching, filing, and thumb placement. Also, at just 5.4 ounces, this knife is lightweight and easy to carry. A tactical Kydex sheath is included for convenient portability.
This knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

Leatherman 81080003 Squirt S4, Storm Review

Leatherman 81080003 Squirt S4, Storm
Average Reviews:

I had a Micra on my keychain for over 4 years. It was so useful that even when I was on vacations and don't need my keys, I carried the Micra with me.Sadly, last month, I forgot to check it in with the luggages.Long story short, rather than waiting another hour to go thru security, I decided to part with my beloved Micra.
After I got back, I started to browse for a replacement, and I found out about the Squirt S4.I decided to try out the Storm color one after reading the reviews. It costed a little more than the Micra, but it has a much better design. My biggest complain about the Micra is that you have to open up the scissors to get to any of the other tools. The Squirt S4 solved this problem, and the only time I have to open it up is when I really need the scissors. The Squirt S4 is also a little shorter and has a more attractive shape and color. The Storm color does not look like the picture displayed on Amazon. It has a purple tint under the light which I think is the best of the 3 colors available. It would be nice if there is a natural stainless steel version without the color.
I am very happy with the replacement and didn't mind paying the extra money. Now if I could just remember to check it in next time I fly!

Leatherman 81040003 Squirt S4, Glacier Review

Leatherman 81040003 Squirt S4, Glacier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have mixed feelings about this product. I gave it 5 stars because it is a top notch Leatherman product. The mixed review is whether it outpreforms the Leatherman Micra that it sort of replaces.
First, its just a tad shorter and a tad wider than the Micra. You won't notice the difference in your pocket.
Second, the reverse opening sissors is just as easy to open as the Micra. It has all the same tools, although they feel smaller they look like they handle the same set of screws. The bottle opener is a bit smaller but it still opens the lift top bottles just as well.
The tweezers do come completely out from the body of the knife which is good and bad. Good because they are easier to use, bad because they are easier to lose. On the other hand they are well integrated into the body of the knife with a small tab for removing them.
And on the Micra when I open it the tweezers always swing out whether I need them or not.
So its a toss between the two of them. So in general I'd have to go with price, and the older Micra is a few bucks cheaper.

Average Reviews:

I can count on the fingers of a closed fist the number of times I've unexpectedly needed a file, teeny saw, corkscrew, or many of the other tools stuffed into many multitools.I don't like wimpy tools, but I also don't need to hear "Is that a multitool or are you just glad to see me?"
All this leads to my multitool preferences.I want a well-selected set of the tools that really matter, sturdy and high quality construction, and pocket-friendly size and shape.I've handled many multitools over the years.None ever hit the mark until the Leatherman Juice S2.
This is the perfect multitool for EDC (Every Day Carry). It's light and elegant enough to ride in dress pants, yet tough enough to be stuffed into my jeans. This is a pants pocket tool, make no mistake. When folded it has no sharp edges or corners to wear a hole in your pocket.Leatherman does not make holsters for the Juice series because that's not how they are meant to be stowed.
The weight and tool durability/quality are well balanced.Stronger tools would have made the S2 too heavy for pant pocket EDC.Lighter tools wouldn't do the job - as is the case with many Swiss Army Knife tools.
The tool selection is perfect too.The most frequently used tools - knife (only one blade is needed and provided), scissors, and can/bottle opener - are available without opening the pliers.Inside, in addition to the pliers, are soft & hard wire cutters and 4 screwdrivers. No rarely used tools to clutter up my clothes and make the tool clumsy to use.
The Juice tools are designed well and seem to be solidly built. The knife, for example, is just long enough to easily section fruit. It has a hollow grind for easy cut entry, yet also has a spine that is wide enough to offer good flexural strength. The blade is nicely polished. The edge is ground with the correct grit and direction for the sort of cutting the tool is likely to see.
It doesn't hurt that the S2 is also the cheapest Juice.Highly recommended.

Leatherman 74208003 Juice CS4, Storm Gray Review

Average Reviews:

I have another leatherman and I take it with me everywhere in my truck. It has saved me many times before and I know it will continue to save me in the future.I just bought 5 of these since I am getting married in October for my groomsman.I know they will love it because it will be a good tool for them in the years to come and they will always think of the wedding when they need to use it.
The tools are well set, and the feel is very sturdy. This thing has enough tools to do some quick fixes if something breaks on your car, house or just about anywhere because you have the basic tools to make the repair.
Seriously, you NEED one of these for those just in case days.

Spyderco SpydeRench Multi-Tool Review

Spyderco SpydeRench Multi-Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Five stars for a neat idea, but three for ergonomics. The design goal was to fit as many tools into a four inch space as possible. The very first prototype was designed by an audio system installer and started with a pair of pliers cut down and a crescent wrench brazed to one handle and a 1/4" hex socket to the other (for screwdriver bits). This is several generations past that first concept, with a knife blade and a diamond dust file added into the mix.

I like that you can seperate the handles and use a screwdrive and the crescent wrench at the same time.Generally, I like the assortment of tools, and the knife blade is the best I've seen on a multitool. But the whole package is a little on the bulky side, especially compared to a Leatherman New Wave Multitool, some of bits and pieces are a little tricky to use until you've had some practice, and as good as the knife blade is, it is a little clumsy to use because of the bulk of the rest of the tool.

I can see this being a good fit for some people's needs, and the concept is awesome, but I'll be sticking with a Leatherman, a Crescent 6-Inch Adjustable Wrench, and a Vise-Grip 5 in. Locking Pliers with Wire Cutter for the moment.I'm torn though, as this is such a well thought out set of tools in a small package.

Smith & Wesson SWPENMPBK Military and Police Tactical Pen, Black Review

Smith & Wesson SWPENMPBK Military and Police Tactical Pen, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pen means business...!!!It's rock solid and delivers an extremely sharp - mind bending - blow to anyone who happens to be on the wrong end of it. I will instantly disable an attacker (if you hit the right spot of course). It's really nice to hold and has a good grip. It's pointy enough to ensure maximum delivery of pain, yet not so pointy it would actually penetrate skin (unless you hit very hard). I like the lanyard hole and that the cap snaps on/off, no screw cap here.

The pen writes rather nicely out of the box (I'm sure you can find various other refills to suit your need), although it's a bit too heavy for writing an essay - for that I prefer a lighter pen, like the Pilot Precise V5 RT (my every day choice of pen).

Best thing about this pen is, it's 100% legal to carry anywhere. You can even take it with you past TSA security checks.

Leatherman Freestyle Review

Leatherman Freestyle
Average Reviews:

First, I have to disagree on many of the points that the person who gave 1 star tried to make.I have no trouble whatsoever opening and closing the knife with one hand.It is a relatively smooth operation.I also was not looking for a screwdriver so this is a great everyday knife for me. But it is not a true multi tool. I have a Gerber Crucial which is similar but of much less quality, as it is made in China rather than the USA like the Leatherman(The Gerber broke after a couple of months). This is a well made tool that has its limits but is still very handy.I have many knives and multi tools and this is a very good piece of equipment.4 stars.

When you unfold it and use the pliers you'll understand that when something is engineered correctly, power isn't a matter of size, but a matter of years of design expertise. Freestyle is great as a stand-alone tool or a companion for those activity-specific tools that don't feature pliers or a knife. Leatherman Kick Removable Clip Multi-Tool - Leatherman 830601 Review

Leatherman Kick Removable Clip Multi-Tool - Leatherman 830601

This was a replacement for a Leatherman tool which I had had for 20 years and just had confiscated at the airport--it was in a carryon bag that I had traveled with in my car, in its black nylon sheath which I did not see when packing for the airplane.I was looking for a lower-cost replacement for what cost me $12 back then; now most of them have a zillion blades which I don't need. This one fit the bill and was comparatively low cost.A good purchase.
