(More customer reviews)The Gerber Freehand is supposed to be the biggest multi-tool ever made. I must admit that I purchased mine to fulfill my own curiosity, rather than for a real need. I own the Leatherman Surge, their largest multi-tool, and will focus my review of the Freehand on a comparison with that tool. The Freehand is larger than the Surge (both in length when closed and weight), however, the Surge offers more tools. Both offer large locking knife blades that are accessed without opening up the pliers. The Leathern has smoother locks. The Freehand has good blades too, though I must admit that the serrated knife with a rounded tip is not immediately useful to me. The Freehand has NO tools inside the the inner part of the plier handles. In order to keep their one handed opening feather, Gerber seems to have been unable to make room for more tools. There are two big knives, scissors, a fold out ruler that ends in an "industrial driver" and five TINY additional tools. The tiny tools include bottle cap opener, can opener, three screw drivers and a lanyard ring. The one-handed opening feature is good, though I haven't had a chance to prove the pliers yet. I would recommend this tool as a gift or an additional multi-tool for the multi-tool lover; however, I doubt that anyone will want this as his only tool.

Gerber's one-hand opening pliers add convenience to this tool. Bigger, Stronger, and Designed to Last
Crafted from high-quality stainless steel, the Freehand has thicker blades than standard multi-tools and a specialized, industrial-strength driver, making it ready to take on big jobs. Whether you're on a road trip, at the jobsite, or exploring the backcountry, you'll find that the strength and durability of this multi-tool suits your needs well. And you'll love the way this heavy-duty tool can be easily opened with one hand, making it as convenient as it is durable.
Job-Specific Tools for Better Results
At the center of the Freehand is a pair of Gerber's patented one-handed opening pliers. With the simple flick of your wrist, these pliers snap into place, ready for action. And that's just the beginning. After the pliers snaps into place stops are deployed so you cannot pinch your hand during use. The safety plus serves two purposes. Locking the tools but by sliding the other direction the smaller tools push up so you can easily pull them out without breaking your finger nails. Unique to all Gerber Multi-Tools are stainless steel shims between all components. This feature allows the user to deploy a single tool without all tools coming out.
Unlike traditional Multi-Tools which often leave you trying to make-do with the wrong tool for a job, the Freehand offers a wide range of 11 easy-to-access outboard tools. Instead of making you pick either a straight blade with a fine edge or a serrated blade that can handle tough rope work, the Freehand gives you both.
It also offers V-cut wire cutters, scissors, a ruler for keeping track of precision work, and both Philips and flathead screwdrivers--so you'll never be without the right tool to get the job done.
Safe, User-Friendly Design
If you've ever had a folding knife close on your hand in the middle of making a tough cut, you'll have a special appreciation for Gerber's Saf.T.Plus system, which locks components securely in place for worry-free use. This proprietary system also helps you keep your hand steady while you're driving screws or trimming wires.
The Freehand Multi-Plier comes with a nylon ballistic-cloth sheath that will protect it from the elements when it's not in use.
If you're looking for even more versatility, Gerber offers an add-on tool kit that contains an adapter, three different sizes of flathead bits, cross point bits, and hex head bits for increased functionality. Also available are several a convenient sharpening systems that can help you keep the blades on your multi-tool in top condition without the hassle of using a whetstone or a round file, including the DF6 Compact Sharpener and the DF8 Sharpener, which uses unique diamond fingers to acheive a perfect 30 degree angle every time you sharpen a blade (tool kit and sharpeners not included).
Gerber's History of Ingenuity
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance.
