(More customer reviews)I like to do small thing at home: an extension cord for my phone, moving the cable, tv and set top box, hanging pictures on the wall, adding a computer to the network without a hanging wire, those kind of stuff. And I wanted a small tool to do that without carrying a full tool box.

And I saw this tool, and, based on the price, I said, "What the hell, let's give it a try." A warning for those guys living outside the USA: customs duties and taxes are quite expensive, I ended up paying 55% of its value because this tool is made in China, and subject to compensatory quota.

The tool is quite light and handy, but not perfect. The hammer is strong enough to put a nail in a brick wall, and the nail claw can remove small nails, but don't expect them to be able to remove a concrete nail. The pliers can remove small nuts and bolts, but they can't be opened that much and the inside space isn't that great. I wasn't able to cut a 12-gauge wire, by example, because I couldn't open the wire cutter enough; little problems with 14-gauge wire if the insulation was big enough; and no problems for telephone wiring. The knife is sharp but maybe a little short, the serrated blade doubles as a sharpener and a flat screwdriver, the can and bottle opener has two wire strippers.

However, there are two tools that are almost useless. There is a small flat screwdriver and a small Phillips screwdriver, located around the middle part of the tool, that are simply too short: the flat one is blocked in it's reach by the hammerhead, the Phillips one is blocked by the pliers' handle. They would be useful if they were either longer or located at the bottom of the tool.

So it's not a perfect tool, but it may be useful when you don't have a toolbox in hand. Certainly it had been useful for me, but far from perfect.

Gerber 30-000106 Mini Plier, Green Review

(More customer reviews)Much cheaper than a Leatherman, but much better quality than most cheapo mini tools.It's a fine choice for the price.

Only two comments:

1. I looked at it in a store, and the edges of the handle are just a little sharp-looking, especially where the textured areas meet the edge.It's not too bad, but it kind of looked a little cheap.Gerber's Clutch, or even better the Leatherman Squirt, have a very slight rounding to the edge.

2. It isn't much smaller than the Clutch.The product description says 20% less, but I don't see where they got that.It's less than 1/4" shorter, and not any slimmer.

Gerber 30-000017 Vise Mini Pliers Keychain Tool, Ten Functions, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I am on my 3rd Leatherman Squirt because I loose them. I've always wished the Squirt came w/ a serrated blade. When I saw Gerber comin out w/ this I decided to buy it ( I also own a Clutch-that I've used once). I thought I'd give it a try. I was very disappointed. The edeges of the handles are sharp on the hands..not smooth and rounded like the Squirt. The whole thing feels no better quality than a cheap $3-5 no name brands you find in some of the discount stores. The serrated blade is better than the one NOT available on the Leatherman. That really is the only positive I can say. I do NOT belive it is worth the $20 when you compare it to some of the similar even cheaper ones. The tips of the pliers on mine do NOT line up even as they should. My Leatherman lines up dead even. If you don't mind paying the $$ and yyou care about quality you'll be happier in long run with a Squirt.

Emergency Fire Starter Review

(More customer reviews)I tried this magnesium fire starting tool - SE(Emergency Fire Starter - SE - Emergency Fire Starter) out as well as the alternative from (from Doan Machinery & Equipment - "Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Fire Starter" Genuine Issue Magnesium Survival Fire Starter).

Both tools work perfectly fine as described and were able to light up fine fibers(cotton, moss, dried grass) and paper without a problem. The Doan tool has more precise instructions and clearly states on the packaging to scrape the magnesium portion of the bar with a knife blade PERPENDICULAR to the edge of the tool. I found this to method made for the most shavings and larger shavings at that. The packaging clearly states that you want a QUARTER(U.S. Coin) sized amount (just shy of 1 inch or 2.4cm diameter) Then holding the bar at 45 degree angle to the pile of shavings drag the knife along the flint to create sparks. The directions remind you to hold the blade perpendicular to the bar while "striking" the flint. I would advise not to strike the flint as they are brittle. However, a nice quick full length drag of the blade down the flint creates a shower of sparks for easy ignition of the magnesium shavings.

Both brands work fine. They are nearly identical in shape(the SE is a few mm longer). Each brand has a different finish/coating on the bar itself is about the only difference I can tell. The performance seemed to be identical or at least close enough to not notice anything to complain about. The big difference is the price. The SE(made in China) is about half the price of the Doan(Made in USA - Patented). It appears to me that they are both the same design with slightly different execution of it, and one is just made overseas so that is why it's cheaper(unless there is less active "ingredients"(magnesium).

One other note: The SE(Chinese one) also comes with a saw blade striker that does work but you need to wear through a protective layer of lacquer for it to work and it's just small enough to annoy my large hands. I just stick with a cheap staineless steel pocket knife for this. I always carry about 3-4 blades when I'm out hiking(cheap folder that I don't care if it gets ruined, sometimes a higher quality folder, always a fixed blade that is larger with full tang, and usually a multi tool(leatherman).

You can't go wrong with either tool. I'd prefer to buy American(Doan - the "other" one) in the long run though, especially for something I might end up having my life depend on.

EDIT: One last note on product life- depending on how much magnesium you need to get your fire going each time, I think the flint will run out long before you ever use up all the magnesium.

GREAT BUY! i paid forty though but if it was 100 dollars i'd buy it!

Gerber 31-000674 MP450 Compact Sport Multi Tool and Paraframe I Review

(More customer reviews)If anyone ever opens a multi-tool museum the Compact Sport 450 will have to be in it simply because it utilizes such an unusual design. Instead of the more common double fold mechanism found in other multi-tools that retract the pliers' jaws back into the handle for carrying, the 450 utilizes a (locking) slide mechanism that slides the jaws back into the handle. Different.Because of this mechanism there is a disconcerting amount of play between the jaws and the handle. The integrity of the slide mechanism also seems to put a lot of faith in very thin little clip-nut-washer-thingies (for lack of a better term). These are not apparent in the product pic but they secure the locking device to the handle and you are actually looking at them edgewise in the pic - they extend along the 3 bumps that are on the outside of the handles just out from the center pivot.

The blades and tools all look good. The tool is relatively light, but the design is not very confidence inspiring. I would expect the belt loop on the tool pouch to fail within a few days outings.

The knife is nice and light weight and has a clip. It inspires a little more confidence.

I paid $30 for the combo; probably about right. At that price I should give it 4 stars or more, but I don't want to make anyone believe that the tool compares favorably with more serious models (that cost more).

Update 11/27/10 further observations:The bottle opener works on a single try (not true for all multitools). After some practice I have mastered the wrist-flip one handed pliers opening technique and admit that this could be handy in some situations (like fishing). I see the combo price is now ~$40 - reasonable I guess. I do like the Paraframe knife.

(More customer reviews)If you need a compact tool, this is definitely a good choice.One of the unique features is that it has a locking mechanism.Releasing a tool is easy enough, as long as you have decent fingernails (I don't find it to be an issue).Once you release a tool, it can be locked by extending the tool all the way out.In order to unlock a tool (push it back into the handle), you MUST release another tool on the same handle to about 30 degrees.

When I was testing out this multitool, I wondered what would happen if you released all of the tools on one handle (I recommend that you do NOT try this out).This ended up locking all of the tools in place.Since all of the tools were locked in place, it seemed impossible to unlock a tool (remember what I said about how you MUST have another tool at 30 degrees).

Fortunately, there is a way to unlock the tool, and all you need is a small flat head screwdriver. On the side of the handle there is a "clip" that is pressing against a U-clasp.This U-clasp is what is locking the tools in place.Each tool has a small notch, and the inside of the U-clasp fits inside that notch.By using the flat-head screwdriver, simply lift the "clip" up about 1 mm, and while using your fingers, push hard on the U-clasp in the same direction as the lift, which will disconnect the U-clasp from the notch.This should give you enough room to free at least one tool.

Once you have one tool free, it should be easy enough to unlock the rest.

Aside from this minor design flaw, this tool seems well made and strong for its size.
