SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool Review

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the tool I carry day in and out because of the hex bolt featureI've customized by removing the straight blade (There is still a seratedblade) and replaced it with a saw and a seatbelt cutter. I sail competivelyand the seatbelt cutter gives me a safe way to cut a line. With the hookend on the blade the line won't come off until its fully cut through. (Ohyeah, the basic knife comes with one open slot for customization.)
Thisis one of the best designs for the pliers. As you can see in the photo thesmooth part of the handles is on the outside so when you bear down on thepliers the handle doesn't cut into your hand. Also as you can see the headtilts. You can get some pressure at the tip at this angle, and you can pickup those little screws that dropped behind the exhaust manifold withoutburning your fingers.
Disadvantages: No sizzors. The file blade dosen'thave that grove for sharpening hooks, the tab for popping out the plierhead pokes holes in my pockets so I have to wear it on my belt. Because thehandles don't do that "leatherman T" the ruler is short, just thelength of one of the handles. I did a sawing test in the woods one day anda 3" blade is too short for firewood. I've kept it incase I need tocut away something while sailing. Otherwise you'll still need a regularsaw.
The sizzors problem I fixed by getting a leatherman Micra. The restI just live with.

Loggerhead Tools ImmIX 10X Multitool - Model# BX10-6NN-01B Review

Loggerhead Tools ImmIX 10X Multitool - Model# BX10-6NN-01B
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to carry a well known name brand multi-tool until I found a couple superior options ( based on 30+ years as a fire fighter, police officer and bomb disposal ( EOD ) technician ). The two best multitools i have found suited for emergency service in my opinion are the SOG Powerlock S60 Made in the USA and the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife SwissTool RS made in Switzerland, both with lifetime warranties.

Sooner or later all good things must come to an end and us old guys get put out to pasture to allow the young blood(s) in an organization rise to the top. Semi retired now I find my self more in the teaching mode of the nuts + bolts of how things work rather than beingon the front lines leading the charge.Consequently with more free time to work around the house, truck and and other boy "toys" I took a serious look at the two multitools I had carried over the years and evaluated them against getting something more fitting for my current needs, something that would be used everyday, lighter weight and not have all the life saving tools featured on my previous EDC ( Every Day Carry ) multitools I had been carrying on the job.It should be noted there is a SOG S60 in the console of my Avalanche and a"RS"in my wife's Honda Pilot glove-box just in case !
Looking at a number of choices among multitools now being offered- and there are a lot to look at ( Made in USA and a lifetime warranty - were primary selection factors along with the tools functionality ) my choice for a new EDC multitool was the ImmiX-10manufactured by LoggerheadTools in Chicago, IL,( [...]). I had seen some of the Loggerhead tools on the TV show "COOL TOOLS"on the DIY Network, and the selection of tools offered seemed to fit my current semi-retired requirements. Loggerhead manufacturers a number of quality multitools and one really needs to take a close hard look at their personal requirements before making their selection(s) on a new multitool(s).My opinion based on functionality, quality, price and reputation the tools manufactured in the USA by Loggerhead need to be on everyones short list when looking at a multitool you will use on a daily basis.

My choice from the Loggerhead lineup was an ImmiX -10with a corrosion resistant electrolysis nickel plated body. The tool has a number of functions that I deemed necessary in a multitool to fit my current requirements. #1 was the two high-carbon, stainless-steel, retractable knife blades - one with a plain edge and the other with a serrated edge with both measuring 2.5".The 6 inch Bionic Wrench(tm) design covers 14 metric and standard wrench sizes, 1/4 inch to 9/16 inch and 7 mm to 14 mm, combining the versatility of an adjustable wrench with the simplicity of pliers, a real improvement for me over the needle nose / bull nose pliers offered in other multitools - and the complicated imported adjustable wrenches now making their way to the USA. The two handles on the ImmiX-10 lock to form a powerful, ergonomic, magnetic bit driverwith a torque enhancing "pistol grip" which enables you to comfortably and confidently apply the right amount of pressure to task at hand. The ImmiX-10storesthe included 10 of the most popular types and sizes of screwdriver heads (slotted, Phillips, Torx, and Robertson) inside one of the handles. The ImmiX-20 offers 20 bits stored in the handles but you forfeit the two knife blades. This multitool is what I consider a full size tool ( NOT a useless mini - multitool), with plenty of room to grip the handles and make the tool do it's thing, I'm a big guy with big paws and no way can I overpower this tool to the point something is going to bend, break or snap under normal use.The ImmiX-10 comes with a QUALITY ( made in the USA ) durable synthetic carrying case with a heavily stitched leather belt loop for vertical carry. There is enough room in the Immix-10 case for me to also carry my small capped Fisher Space pen AND a 4 inch steel prybar - so they are very handy and convenient when needed. The ImmiX-10 is also lighter to carry on your belt than the previous models mentioned ( S60 + RS ).

It did not take long for me to find projects for this workhorse to get going - the 10 rusted anchor bolts on my screenroom were the first place that the tool attacked and it performed without a problem. Looking for other things to do - a quick adjustment to my grandsons bicycle handle bars was accomplished along with making sure the wheel / axle nuts were snug and the seat was properly adjusted. Installing two replacement light fixtures in the garage made good use of the integral magnetic bit holder for tightening screws and serrated knife blade for stripping wires. Next was cutting off some vines that had wrapped around the tines on my rototillerand tightening a loose screw holding the air filter in place. The ImmiX-10 is just a fun , useful, powerful multitool to carry on your belt.

The ImmiX-10 is available on line from [...], www.amazon.comand others.

these hard hats have a nice, sturdy adjustable head band. i prefer the head bands that click on the adjustment band ( this one does ) to get an exact fit.

high quality construction with a really nice camo pattern. if you are looking for a hard hat with a flat finish, this isn't for you. the camo is not a flat finish it almost has a metallic look to it.

all in all, a very nice looking hard hat with all the safety features required.

Really like this light. It's small and compact yet durable and brighter than a mag light 4d cell. The range is great. It's about the same price as the cheaper surefire; but, it's a concentrated beam instead of a flood; but, with enough surrounding light to see around you at a close distance as well as far.

Corona Clipper MT 3850 Fusion 9-Function Gardening Bypass Pruner Multi-Tool Review

Corona Clipper MT 3850 Fusion 9-Function Gardening Bypass Pruner Multi-Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the Corona Fusion 9 Multi-tool Bypass Pruner and have used it sporadically in my job as Manager of Grounds in a campus setting. The tool has some nice qualities, it folds away compactly, can be worn on the belt in an inconspicuous manner, and has sharp shears that work well for trimming lightweight plant material. It works well for deadheading flowers, spot trimming of the sort a manager might handle, and its best use -- to be there all the time -- is ideal.

My beefs, however, are two and they are major.

First, the blades inside the handle have no means of locking, nor do they stay inside the handle well.On two occasions, I've been cut by the point of the knife when it slightly protruded from the handle storage area while folding away the bypass cutter. The first time I chalked it up to operator error, but even after taking much care in folding away the pruner, I've been cut again. The knife blade simply drops out of the handle by its own weight, and when it protrudes just a bit -- not always enough to notice while folding -- it cuts.I've to tighten up the screws/rivets (not clear if they are screws or rivets) to make the blades tighter in the handle, and have had some success, but they are still not as firmly stored as I would like.As the owner of several other multi-tools, Leatherman, Schrade, and Gerber, I know that there are better ways to safely insure that the blades stay inside the handles of a tool of this nature than the Corona product.

My second beef is that the tool broke while trimming an evergreen branch of approximately 1/8" stem diameter. As I was cutting the branch, I heard a snap and the cutter anvil failed to close all the way. When I examined the tool, I noticed that the handle was snapped part way off where the screw went through to the cutter blade. When I went to fold up the tool, the handle snapped the rest of the way off, rendering the tool useless.

I am in process of contacting Corona to see about warranty on this tool. They promise a lifetime warranty, and I expect that they will stand behind their product. If they do not, I will amend this review.

At the end of the day, I would consider purchasing a different product, and I cannot recommend this particular tool.Note that this is not a strike against Corona, who manufactures some of the best pruning devices in the Grounds market -- just THIS particular tool, which I found to be both dangerous in manufacture and weak in construction.

I got this tool as a gift in 1997 and used it daily until I last it sixmonths ago. The geared jaws worked surprisinglywell and really gives onea lot of leverage. After losing the SOG, I replaced it with a BuckTool. What amistake! I really miss the SOG. Fairly quickly, I ruined theBucktool's cutters when cutting the same things as I used to cut with theSOG. Also, the Bucktool's handles tend to twist out of the way when forceis applied to the handles (due to a bad design in the folding mechanism). The SOG does lack locking blades, but I never found that to be a problem inpractice. The SOG is a good tool and I would get another one.

Gerber 07563 Pro Scout Needlenose - Multi-Plier Review

Gerber 07563 Pro Scout Needlenose - Multi-Plier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The dominant multi-tool on the market is likely the Leatherman Wave. The Gerber has two main advantages versus the Leatherman (and one weakness).
The first advantage is that all the tools lock (not so for theLeatherman though the blade locks). A locking blade is clearly desirable, but a nice feature for other tools as well.
The second advantage is thestrength of the pliers. It's hard to see from the image, but the pliersretract into the handle versus the Wave where the handles unfold to exposethe pliers. Having looked at both before buying the Gerber, I suspect (butam not sure) that the strength of the Gerber design is greater. While theLeatherman's pliers have a pivot for each arm (plus the center pivot), theGerber only has the center pivot.
This strength leads to the one weakness- that the pliers have to be opened to access any of the other tools (whilewith the Leatherman you can get at the blade without opening the wholetool).
Both are fine tools, what sold me on the Gerber is how the pliersretract and the cool sound it makes when you deploy the pliers and theylock into place - a very solid, satisfying metal thunk. Hint: to make surethat you can deploy with one hand, rub a little candle wax into the plierchannels in the handle. Also the scissors are made by Fiskar - a specialtyscissor maker - nice and sharp. Besides, it's sometimes nice to havesomething slightly different from what everyone else has.

Gerber 22-41638 Flick Multi-Pliers Needlenose, Black Review

Gerber 22-41638 Flick Multi-Pliers Needlenose, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was kind of skeptical to buy this tool because of its size but now that I own one it is not that small but just the right size and weight for what we all use it for. Love the flick action and the locking mechanism of the handles are kind of cool, the black coating has not stained my hands a bit, is on the tool for good and a pretty good finish too. The outboard tools was the #1 most important reason I bought this tool even though they are not that easy to access because of their sizes but with a little practice is not that bad, the knife, saw, serrated blade and scissor are good. Gerber should work a little on the locks for the tools and make them a little rounded edges or something they are kind of hard on your fingers when pull to access the tools also the blades are a little hard to open one handed, they too need some work maybe a little hump on the blades to make the slot bigger for the thumb to fit a little better and then it will make it easier to open one handed. I`m pretty sure you will soon get use to it once you start using it. I personally love the Flick and I`m willing to accept the minor flosses like all the other tools out there. I recommend this tool and I`m pretty sure who ever buys one will do the same.

Hobo-SS Fork, Knife, Spoon Review

Hobo-SS Fork, Knife, Spoon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is what's been called a "Hobo Knife"; it has a knife blade (which locks) and a fork and spoon which do not.

The fit and finish are good. The knife blade is held in place when you're using it with a lock that's at the back of the knife.

All in all, good value for the money. It's stainless, which makes sense for an eating utensil.

One thing to note: the spoon doesn't fit into the knife the way the knife blade and the fork do. They're flat, so they fold in as though this were simply a multi blade pocketknife.

But because the spoon is concave (or convex, depending on which side you're on), it fits on the outside of the knife case.

That just means that this is a little thick to carry in a pants pocket. On the other hand, it's got a perfectly okay little nylon case that fits on your belt, so no problem!

This is sort of an early version multi-tool; not only does it have a knife blade (which is adequate, not spectacular), but also a fork, spoon, and the fork doubles as a bottle opener!

And I know that this review doesn't fit in the series of reviews of consumer bankruptcy dvds and books that I'm currently doing. Oh, well. It's a neat little hiking and camping dingus anyway, and I liked it.

Gerber 30-000334 Strata Multi Plier with Sheath Review

Gerber 30-000334 Strata Multi Plier with Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Updated: Changed rating from 4 stars to 3 because of the difficulty in closing the tools.

As my other reviews will show, I am a big fan of the Gerber Suspension. The Strata just arrived today and I have been putting it through its paces.

Initial impressions are favorable. The size is very similar to the Suspension (a little larger than the Leatherman Wave). The toolsets are similar, with the Strata containing pliers, blade, scissors, saw, bottle and can openers, file and screwdrivers. Good news is that the tools are very much improved. The pliers are sturdy enough to bend a penny *and* spring loaded. The spring load is my biggest beef with the otherwise perfect Leatherman Wave, as it's extremely useful when pulling staples and small nails. The blade is partially serrated and of a useful size. The Phillips screwdriver is markedly improved and is now a proper driver instead of the pointy flat Phillips of the Suspension. The saw is also about 1/2" longer. Doesn't seem like much, but now can be useful (I have yet to use the saw in anything but testing, though). The scissors also gains a thumb shelf so cutting is much easier. It has an interesting lock feature for the tools that takes a moment to understand. Another nice feature is that the wire cutter is replaceable. For the most part, the tools are conveniently located and opening the pliers is not necessary to access the tools. For the most part (but see the issues below) they are easily accessible.

There are some downsides. The fit is not quite as good as the Leatherman Wave. The rear of the handles are skewed by about 2mm when closed. That's shameful given the cost of this tool. Don't misunderstand, it does feel quite solid and opens with reassuring sturdiness, but for $65 there should be no skew. The Suspension gets high marks because it is a serviceable $30 tool. This is twice as expensive. I am also not fond of plastic on a tool, but time will tell how that holds up.

One annoyance is that the Phillips driver and flathead/package cutter are difficult to open. You can get the Phillips open by using not the notch but using your fingernail to grab the tip of the tool. The notch just didn't give enough leverage to open. However, try as I might, accessing the flathead driver next to it was impossible without opening either the saw or the Phillips first.

A larger issue is the locking system for the tools. Unlike the Suspension which has a thumb stud -- which though small was easy to operate -- the Strata has a flat plastic slide. The problem is that it's difficult to slide the lock because it's so smooth (and the coating of oil over the entire unit didn't help at all). If it wasn't for the small gap to insert a fingernail, you'd be hard pressed to close the Strata. The tools lock very securely with this system, but it can be frustrating to close. The obvious improvement is to change the flat sliding mechanism to a protruding tab. This wouldn't add much width -- just 2mm or so -- but would drastically reduce the force needed to slide the tab. After a day of fighting it, I'm still unable to close one side of the tools without gripping with a cloth or gloves.

My final quibble is the sheath. It's a poor fit and if you insert the tool in all the way, it's quite difficult to remove. I found myself pushing the tool up from the bottom of the sheath rather than pulling it as I do the Suspension.

In short, I am disappointed with the Strata. I had high expectations from Gerber as they make an absolutely perfect knife (the LMF II) and their value was the best of the major players. The deficiencies in the Strata makes me wonder if anyone from Gerber actually tried it out before commiting to manufacture.

How would I improve this multi-tool?

First, change the slider from a flat plastic to a slightly angled and more easily grippable button. The only piece that would need to be changed is the slider itself as it is just bolted on.

Second, modify the thumb notch on the Phillips and flathead driver by putting them closer to the tip of the tool in order to provide better leverage in opening. It appears that the current design was done to make the tip of the Phillips line up with the center of rotation (important in a screwdriver), but this can still be achieved with a minor adjustment.

Third, improve the manufacturing process. The Suspension, despite some minor flaws, is an incredible tool for the price. The Strata is twice as much and yet is not built to the same tolerances as the Suspension.

Butterfly Opening with Spring-Loaded Pliers
At the center of Gerber Strata Multi Plier's efficient butterfly design is a sturdy pair of pliers that allow you to get a secure hold on a wide variety of surfaces, so you can tighten stubborn bolts, move hot camp pans, and pull tough knots loose. Also featured is a spring-action mechanism that allows you to deploy the pliers quickly and use them effectively.
The Strata's unique butterfly design also makes each of its remaining tools accessible from the outside, which allows for quick, one-handed access to any tool--so there's no need to open the pliers to get at a bottle opener or the blade.
Sturdy, Half-Serrated Knife Blade
The tool's dependable blade is big enough to handle the tasks taken on by any dedicated pocketknife, and it features a half-serrated edge for making quick cuts through rope and other fibrous materials. Offering the best of both worlds without the weight of two blades, the half of the blade that has a fine edge allows for accurate detail work and easy sharpening.
13 Easy-to-Access Tools and Safety Locking System
Whether you're backpacking or doing other work, using the wrong tool to try and complete a job can be frustrating, time consuming, and even dangerous--which is where the Strata's true multi-tool design comes in. With 13 total components designed to deliver application-specific performance across a broad range of job types, it helps ensure that you never cut yourself or break a knife tip while attempting to tighten a screw with your blade.
Beyond its tough, sharp blade and spring-loaded pliers, the Strata offers a set of carbide pinch cutters , a saw, a pair of scissors, a Phillips driver, a large flat driver, a can and bottle opener, a small-tipped file, a small flat driver, and a special tool designed for opening retail packages effectively. And for added safety and improved handling, Gerber's unique SAF.T.PLUS locking system keeps each component open during use--so you don't ever have to worry about a blade folding on your hand--and keeps each component securely closed when the tool is in your bag or pocket.
Compact Design and Comfortable Grip
Despite being a completely utilitarian accessory, the Strata still shows off unique, contemporary good looks. Its stainless steel body and components feature a sleek brushed finish. In addition, the Strata measures a length of 6 inches when open and 4 inches when closed, and its ergonomic design features comfortable, contoured grip areas for accurate handling.
It weighs in at just 7.4 ounces to keep light packers happy, and it comes with a durable nylon sheath.

Good value for the price. The pliers are sturdy, the knives are fine, screwdrivers and bottle opener are less stout. No can opener. The scissors work fine on heavy tape and light bandage wraps.Driver sizes are fairly small, but not small enough for, say, eyeglasses. The whole unit is a comfortable pocket size.Overall, nice for the price. If bigger, stronger, precision-made drivers is must-have, better get the Leatherman.

These are really cute. Not in a good way. Smaller than i thought. Broke in my hand while trying to use as pliers on a simple task. Screw drivers akward to use because you are trying to spin tiny open pliers on its end while pushing downward. It is better than nohing, if stranded, in the wilderness, with no hope of finding a shreds metal to be used as improvised tools. They are shiny though.
