SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool Review

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the tool I carry day in and out because of the hex bolt featureI've customized by removing the straight blade (There is still a seratedblade) and replaced it with a saw and a seatbelt cutter. I sail competivelyand the seatbelt cutter gives me a safe way to cut a line. With the hookend on the blade the line won't come off until its fully cut through. (Ohyeah, the basic knife comes with one open slot for customization.)
Thisis one of the best designs for the pliers. As you can see in the photo thesmooth part of the handles is on the outside so when you bear down on thepliers the handle doesn't cut into your hand. Also as you can see the headtilts. You can get some pressure at the tip at this angle, and you can pickup those little screws that dropped behind the exhaust manifold withoutburning your fingers.
Disadvantages: No sizzors. The file blade dosen'thave that grove for sharpening hooks, the tab for popping out the plierhead pokes holes in my pockets so I have to wear it on my belt. Because thehandles don't do that "leatherman T" the ruler is short, just thelength of one of the handles. I did a sawing test in the woods one day anda 3" blade is too short for firewood. I've kept it incase I need tocut away something while sailing. Otherwise you'll still need a regularsaw.
The sizzors problem I fixed by getting a leatherman Micra. The restI just live with.

Silverhill T10 Torx Driver for Tamper Resistant Screws Review

I ordered this because it was a buck (.97 cents) plus shipping...I got it just in case.

I currently have a set of star bits but they dont have any holes in them.well for the T-10 on the XBOX the little holes aren't needed.Duh. my bad...It's only for the T-8 that is used for your controller. The long wells for the screw made it impossible to fit normal sized star bits 1/4 inch bits down there. So, this isn't really needed if you already have regular sized bits for the XBOX case.but if you dont --- this is a cheap alternative.

Product Description:
If you want to open your PS3, then you need a tamper resistant torx size 10 screwdriver to remove the first screw. After that, the rest of the screws require a standard phillips screwdriver. Why buy a whole set, when you need just one screwdriver? This driver has a small hole in the tip, to bypass the post in a tamper resistant torx screw, like the ones found in the OEM Playstation 3. The screwdriver handle is easy to use, the yellow part turns freely in your palm while you are applying pressure to it. Handle is also ergonomic for ease of use. It starts with a high quality handle, but, the metal shank is Chrome Vanadium Hardened Steel (CR-V) 6150. This is high quality metal. We chose this metal so that the screwdriver will last longer. High quality design, high quality material, and an excellent price.

Imperial Schrade STINCP Schrade Tool Review

Imperial Schrade STINCP Schrade Tool

I have been the owner/user of a Schrade multitool since in debuted. While it has had it's faults, such as the small screwdriver that doesn't lock and the lock mechanism that can be easily sprung by pushing back on the small screwdriver, the Schrade ST1 multitool was the most comfortable to use, most useful, largest pliers multi-tool I have ever used.

I was very disappointed when Schrade went under, and thrilled when the Chinese version appeared.Wow- the pliers are much smaller, smaller than my leatherman wave. The tools are stiff and of a lighter gauge metal. This is NOT the same tool. The world waits for someone- Leatherman, are you listening?- to come up with an improved version of this great tool.

I have had this tool for a couple of years now and am so pleased with it. The metal finish is so smooth that it is a delight to hold. Friends just can't put it down sometimes. The blades and tools included are exceptional quality, especially the scissors and knife. The accessory kit enables you to turn the screwdriver into a holder for other size screwdrivers or even sockets and Allen keys. I have added my own accessories to the kit so that I have everything to maintain my wheelchair. A superb tool and much more comfortable to hold than the Swiss tool and Leatherman that I looked at.

I got this tool as a gift in 1997 and used it daily until I last it sixmonths ago. The geared jaws worked surprisinglywell and really gives onea lot of leverage. After losing the SOG, I replaced it with a BuckTool. What amistake! I really miss the SOG. Fairly quickly, I ruined theBucktool's cutters when cutting the same things as I used to cut with theSOG. Also, the Bucktool's handles tend to twist out of the way when forceis applied to the handles (due to a bad design in the folding mechanism). The SOG does lack locking blades, but I never found that to be a problem inpractice. The SOG is a good tool and I would get another one.

Gerber 07563 Pro Scout Needlenose - Multi-Plier Review

Gerber 07563 Pro Scout Needlenose - Multi-Plier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The dominant multi-tool on the market is likely the Leatherman Wave. The Gerber has two main advantages versus the Leatherman (and one weakness).
The first advantage is that all the tools lock (not so for theLeatherman though the blade locks). A locking blade is clearly desirable, but a nice feature for other tools as well.
The second advantage is thestrength of the pliers. It's hard to see from the image, but the pliersretract into the handle versus the Wave where the handles unfold to exposethe pliers. Having looked at both before buying the Gerber, I suspect (butam not sure) that the strength of the Gerber design is greater. While theLeatherman's pliers have a pivot for each arm (plus the center pivot), theGerber only has the center pivot.
This strength leads to the one weakness- that the pliers have to be opened to access any of the other tools (whilewith the Leatherman you can get at the blade without opening the wholetool).
Both are fine tools, what sold me on the Gerber is how the pliersretract and the cool sound it makes when you deploy the pliers and theylock into place - a very solid, satisfying metal thunk. Hint: to make surethat you can deploy with one hand, rub a little candle wax into the plierchannels in the handle. Also the scissors are made by Fiskar - a specialtyscissor maker - nice and sharp. Besides, it's sometimes nice to havesomething slightly different from what everyone else has.

Gerber 08239 MP800 Legend Multitool Review

Gerber 08239 MP800 Legend Multitool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a building superintendent, I wear a multi-tool every day on my belt, and use it often.I was really looking foward to getting the Gerber because it offered two main features that I wanted - a one-handed opening blade, and tools that all lock open. With all the multi-tools being manufactured today, it's amazing how few offer these two crucial (for me) features in a single tool. The Gerber Legend is the only tool I'm aware of that has both a one handed opening blade and tools that all lock open.If anyone reading this knows of another tool that has both these features, please let me know.
Let me first say that Gerber has made many great innovations with this tool. The rotateable/replaceable inserts for the wire cutters is a great idea, along with the replaceable jigsaw blade and the spring-loaded pliars.Having said that, I'll organize my review into two categories - Major Mistakes and Niggles.
Major Mistakes - The pliars don't open wide enough. The very tips of the needle-nose pliars don't even make it an inch apart---15/16ths to be exact. To get into the teeth of the pliars, you need to be 5/8ths inch or smaller!Compare these numbers with the Leatherman Super Tool's 1 3/4" opening at the tips and a full inch-plus at the teeth.I feel that the small opening of the Gerber pliars will disappoint many people - you simply won't be able to grab a lot of stuff you'd expect to be able to.Personally, if I can't take off a shower-head or fawcet aerator with it, that's much of the usefulness of the pliars gone right there.Major, major mistake on Gerber's part, especially when (seemingly) this could have easily been engineered differently.
Some tools are difficult to open. The phillips screwdriver recesses too far in the tool when you close it fully, making the nail catch impossible to get at.Luckily, the tip of my pinky finger is small enough to get in there and pull it out by the tip.But I know plenty of guys for whom this would be impossible to open.Ditto for the file/large flatblade...it has a thumb-nail catch...but when you close it fully it gets completely recessed behind the other flat-blade screwdrivers! And I mean totally! If your hands are greasy or sweaty (which is a lot on the job) you're not getting it out without taking all the other stuff out first.Major, major mistake on Gerber's part, especially when this is so easily fixed - there's loads of room there for a nice accessable nail catch.
Niggles - The rubber grips are stickers and one came out on the second day of use.Why put them at all?Why not just cast the knurled surface into the handles? The finish of the tool is nowhere near the finish of a leatherman.Casting marks are evident on the handles, the thumb-studs are inserted and then impacted from the other side to hold them in place (which may be a very strong and lasting (time will tell) and cost-effective way to assemble but is ugly and cheap-looking.The jigsaw blade is held in place by a small metal clip that doesn't look like it will withstand much abuse (time will tell with this too).
It's a shame I couldn't give this tool a better review. It's got a lot of stuff going for it...light weight, innovation, and a great locking system that's easy to use. I really wanted to like it but the pliars thing is so major...I'm going to need to replace it eventually just for that 'cause it doesn't pay to carry the thing around if I can't grab stuff with it.Make me one with the fit and finish of a Leatherman and fix the other simple stuff and you've got it.

Leatherman Knife K503X Straight/Serrated Edge - Leatherman 830514 Review

Average Reviews:

I own several Leatherman tools. My relationship with them spans nearly 2 decades. The latest addition to the family, the K503X, is a pleasant change from the excellent norm. The K503X actually has the attractive contemporary looks of an ergonomically designed pocket knife...but, with the usual rugged stability and well stored tools that Leatherman has provided for so long now. As an arson investigator, artist/craftman and all around handy man I find that the K503X proves to be an invaluable tool...

...you should get one.

Leatherman 78105003 Juic+B15976e XE6 Pocket Multitool Review

Leatherman 78105003 Juic+B15976e XE6 Pocket Multitool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Leatherman Juice XE6 is at best a compromise, at worst a bit of disappointment. I have used mine for about 6 months now and most of the time it serves me very well but there are some elements of the design that make me search for different tool to do a job I ought to be able to do with the XE6. I'll list the things that annoy me, anything I don't mention you can assume lives up to the claims in the promotional literature.
First off, the pliers: The jaw design is functional and the jaws seem pretty tough but you'll not get to push them to their limit since the axle they are mounted on doesn't seem up to the job. When you squeeze hard on the handles they flex slightly where they join the jaws. This means when you squeeze the pliers on something thin the handles touch together in the middle (specifically the top of the file and the top of the saw make contact). Often when gripping small things I want to squeeze the handles harder to get a better grip, but it doesn't achieve much because I am already making the handles touch in the middle and also I'm scared of damaging the mounting of the jaws.
Second the scissors: They are sharp but some element in the design means they don't cut very well towards the tip of the blade, even when cutting easy things like thin paper. I think the blades simply meet at an angle too close to parallel, in essence they have tried to incorporate too much blade into the short length and not made the handle long enough. The scissors on standard Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are better.
Third the corkscrew: This is a bit of a joke really, the levering `assist' mechanism puts pressure on the top of a wine bottle using a single edge of metal about a millimeter thick. I used this for a while but after it cracked lumps of glass off the top of a couple of bottles I gave up and resorted to brute force and pulling the corks out using the screw alone. Being used to removing corks in this manner using a Swiss army knife I don't find the level of force needed much of a problem, but there are further faults with the Leatherman's corkscrew; the screw itself is quite short and narrow, it works fine on artificial corks but it often tears traditional corks in half leaving the other end still in the neck of the bottle.
Lastly a minor point on ergonomics: The screwdriver blades are made to be levered out with your thumbnail. The length of the screwdriver blades means that if you lever one out quickly with your thumb the end of the driver is likely to make quite hard contact with the flesh of your thumb just below the nail. The screw driver blades are sharp enough to cut you quite easily. I have got used to opening the screw drivers without cutting myself but believe me, if you use one you will likely suffer the same minor injuries at some point during use.
This may read like a rather scathing review but bare in mind I have only mentioned the things that disappointed me. Just about everything else is great. The blades are great the file and saw are great. The screw drivers are very high quality. Everything is bundled together into a very compact package and very attractively finished. When closed all the lines and edges are smooth making the tool suitable for carrying in a pocket or bag. There are some very nice touches to the design like a series of small ridges near the base on the back of the serrated blade so you can identify which blade is which without opening them.
Overall I am still pleased with the tool, but I was disappointed by the week feeling pliers and the scissors that are frankly just badly designed.

I owned a few multi-tools in my life.I had the compact Swiss army knife, Leatherman micra, and other Asian made models with similar functions.I have to say - THIS IS THE BEST COMPACT MULTI-TOOL on the market. Why?First of all, it is extremely small. Most other compact tools require you to attach them to your keychain, regardless of their design, they will always get in the way of your keys, your car remote .. etc. This thing IS A KEY on your keychain. It coexists with other keys, does not takes up space in your jeans.I work warehouse, and this tool is always a life saver.Opening boxes, cut tapes, bundles, industrial shrink wrap ... I mean I use almost everyday for 6 month, and it is still just as sharp. What else do you want from a $10 tool?

If you want a minimalistic compact multi-tool, this is the one you want.Highly recommended!

Squirt P4, Storm Gray Review

Squirt P4, Storm Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Introduction:
After having my Squirt P4 for 8 more months, I thought that I would post a follow-up to my previous review.
Good things:
After carrying it on a daily basis for 8+ months, all the tools still have their snug fit. They haven't loosened up at all, and that's a good thing. The pliers/wirecutters have been tremendously useful; it's hard to believe the number of small chores you find to do when you always have a mini-pliers available. And the blade has retained its sharpness well.
Bad things:
Two points here. The gray anodization has begun to chip off along the edges, but considering that I have been carrying it in my pocket rubbing up against my keys, it's not too bad. And because of its size, the bottle opener requires some care to remove bottle caps.
Conclusion:
I still highly recommend this tool.
