SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool Review

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools *S31-N Paratool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the tool I carry day in and out because of the hex bolt featureI've customized by removing the straight blade (There is still a seratedblade) and replaced it with a saw and a seatbelt cutter. I sail competivelyand the seatbelt cutter gives me a safe way to cut a line. With the hookend on the blade the line won't come off until its fully cut through. (Ohyeah, the basic knife comes with one open slot for customization.)
Thisis one of the best designs for the pliers. As you can see in the photo thesmooth part of the handles is on the outside so when you bear down on thepliers the handle doesn't cut into your hand. Also as you can see the headtilts. You can get some pressure at the tip at this angle, and you can pickup those little screws that dropped behind the exhaust manifold withoutburning your fingers.
Disadvantages: No sizzors. The file blade dosen'thave that grove for sharpening hooks, the tab for popping out the plierhead pokes holes in my pockets so I have to wear it on my belt. Because thehandles don't do that "leatherman T" the ruler is short, just thelength of one of the handles. I did a sawing test in the woods one day anda 3" blade is too short for firewood. I've kept it incase I need tocut away something while sailing. Otherwise you'll still need a regularsaw.
The sizzors problem I fixed by getting a leatherman Micra. The restI just live with.

Imperial Schrade STINCP Schrade Tool Review

Imperial Schrade STINCP Schrade Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been the owner/user of a Schrade multitool since in debuted. While it has had it's faults, such as the small screwdriver that doesn't lock and the lock mechanism that can be easily sprung by pushing back on the small screwdriver, the Schrade ST1 multitool was the most comfortable to use, most useful, largest pliers multi-tool I have ever used.

I was very disappointed when Schrade went under, and thrilled when the Chinese version appeared.Wow- the pliers are much smaller, smaller than my leatherman wave. The tools are stiff and of a lighter gauge metal. This is NOT the same tool. The world waits for someone- Leatherman, are you listening?- to come up with an improved version of this great tool.

Paladin Tools PT-540 Powerplay Multi-tool For Electrical and Networking Review

Paladin Tools PT-540 Powerplay Multi-tool For Electrical and Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PT-540 is well-built.For a data person like me it's very handy. There are some things I dislike about it but overall it's a great tool.

Getting to the tools in the handles requires you to open the tool up, swing open a metal door and then extend the tool you wish to you. That metal door is somehow annoying.I wish, like with Leatherman's Surge, that they just beefed up the handles and not bothered with the metal covers.I've popped off one of them a couple times already.

The pliers and in fact the whole opening of the tool is gear driven. That's nice.It feels very solid which is a big plus. It's easier to work one-handed than a Leatherman with articulates in several spots to accomplish the same thing.I haven't gotten the little jaw stop to work quite right yet.I just stick a couple fingers between the handles and let them guide how closed the tool goes, just like I was stripping a small wire with a pair linemens or side cutters.

I have the same gripe about how the case fits on your belt as I did with the Leatherman surge. It sticks up too high about the belt.I wish they'd come up with a way of lower it down so the top of the case, where the flap extends, is no more than an inch above the belt.Making it adjustable would have been a great addition too.

I haven't gotten the 1/4" adapter to slide onto the bit yet.It appears to be too tight.I don't really plan on using it for that anyway so no big loss.I also haven't figured out how to get the adapter out of the elastic pouch under the knife in the sheath without taking off the sheath and slapping the pouch across my hand.Still no big loss for what I want it for.

Finally, to explain the title of my review, understand that the PT-540 is a multi-tool first and a knife second. The knife blade is rather lightweight and hard to use.I like how my Leatherman Surge blade is stronger and tougher.I also wish Paladin had made the knife blade accessible without opening the tool at all.The blade, the most used tool, should be something you can open up and use one-handed without opening the tool, the metal cover, extending the blade, closing the metal cover, and closing the knife to form a solid hand (but an offset handle too).As a knife it's not very good.As a multi-tool it's very nice.

Kikkerland CD401 Classic Survival Tool Review

Kikkerland CD401 Classic Survival Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hope nobody is considering this tool for anything other than having an emergency backup to what should already be every day carry tools. It's decent quality, but I certainly wouldn't put it at "top notch" status. And the functions are mostly hard to pull off with any degree of force. The knife is on a short side which makes it difficult to use.The "screwdriver" which is little more than one corner ground to a flat-head shape is only useful in wide-open areas with larger screws, and with the knife on the same edge, one has to be very careful indeed.

The only tools that I found to be decently easy to use are the saw and bottle opener. The saw since it was on the long side and the opposite side (ruler) allows for a decent grip. The Bottle opener is equally easy to operate.

The can opener forces you to use the saw as a finger grip and the wrench slots pretty much require that any bolts are not very tight, and that's if you can get the tool on it in the first place.

This really didn't fit well in my money clip wallet, but it might in a full sized wallet. So, as an emergency backup, it might get you out of a jam and could actually come in handy once in a while.Forget using it as a keychain tool... it's way too dangerous to leave out in the open (and the plastic cover that came with mine was laughably cheap). It won't make it through the TSA unless someone's asleep at the wheel, so traveling with it isn't really an option either.

I'd give it a 2.5 star, but for the money, it's hard to beat, so I'm rounding up.You could always toss one in the glove compartments, toolboxes, bookbag, etc. but I strongly recommend a Small Leatherman Micra or Squirt if compact is what you seek. Those are FAR more functional (AND SAFE!!!) in comparison.Get it if your curiosity or gearlust must be sated.

Leatherman 830555 Hybrid Gardening Multitool with Nylon Sheath Review

Leatherman 830555 Hybrid Gardening Multitool with Nylon Sheath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these for my fiancee, who is the gardener type.I bought it so she would stop absconding with my pocket knife, and so far my plan has worked nicely.I'm no conoisseur of bypass pruners, but these seem well-constructed and plenty sharp. The tools are typical Leatherman steel, which is to say adequate unto the task.

I strongly prefer locking knives, and this one doesn't.That's a bummer, particularly with the saw.I've also become very accustomed to having access to the knife blades on the outside of the tool (the way the Wave and Charge are designed) but I think that would have made this tool too bulky and unwieldy. As it is, it's a big tool...noticeably larger than my Charge. The handles are comfortable enough, with nice injection-molded rubber inserts.

The sheath is great. There's a metal pocket clip, and a nylon belt slot. The tool can be stored either folded, or in pruner-mode, which is a very nice touch.

Well made, well designed, well-conceived.Despite my quibbles, the lady is a happy gardener, and my pocket knife is way less muddy.Mission accomplished.

Tool Logic CC1SB Credit Card Companion With 1/2 Serrated Knife, Compass, Magnification Lens, Tweezers and Toothpick, Translucent Black Review

Tool Logic CC1SB Credit Card Companion With 1/2 Serrated Knife, Compass, Magnification Lens, Tweezers and Toothpick, Translucent Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best true "pocket" knife ever. Why? Because it's so slim that I carry it everywhere, usually in my front pants pocket, and you don't even know it's there.

The knife blade is really sharp and beefy...cut's through rope, rubber hose, cardboard packaging, etc. with ease. Anytime someone asks "anyone got a pocket knife?" they are amazed when I pull this thing out. It will handle some really tough cutting jobs.

The other features get a mixed review: The little plastic tweezers work pretty good for pulling out slivers and such.

The compass...stopped working after a year or so...not sure if it was ever accurate.

The toothpick...basically worthless, and mine fell out and got lost a long time ago.

The screwdriver/bottle opener thingy...flatblade only and not very easy to use (if you just need to loosen or tighten a screw it's fine...if you have a lot of twisting to do forget it). Never really used the bottle opener on a bottle, but it is pretty small so I doubt it would give you enough leverage for even a really tight bottle cap. But the pick thing on the end has a very sharp point that I have used for I can't remember what...but it is useful.

The magnifying glass works...but it's pretty small

If you buy this tool, buy it for the knife...it's well worth it! Don't let my comments on the little doo-dads turn you off. It is without a doubt the easiest to carry, most useful, and best true "pocket" knife I have used. In fact, I am going to buy myself a new one! My old one is more than 10 years old, and still in decent shape, but getting dull. The serrated edge is great, but hard to sharpen. I've used it so much I have got my moneys worth many times over, so I have no problem buying another one.

Swiss+Tech UKCSB-1 Utili-Key 6-in-1 Key Ring Tool Review

Swiss+Tech UKCSB-1 Utili-Key 6-in-1 Key Ring Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Utili-Key has to be one of the most convenient multi-tools out there. I don't go anywhere without it, and it gets a lot of use in all kinds of circumstances.
It's the size of a large car key. When it is locked on the keyring, it isn't going anywhere unless and until I am ready to use it. The screwdriver heads are fully functional and sturdy, although there is a risk of getting cut on the knife blade if it is handled carelessly (not like I'd do that, but this isn't a kid's toy). The blade is sharp and stays that way very well.
If you like being prepared for anything that might happen, this is a must-have tool for you. Check out the rest of Swiss-Tech's product line as well.
One warning: Do _not_ carry a Utili-Key in anything carried on a plane. Scanners do know what they are and how to find them. Stow it instead because it will be confiscated otherwise. I hate taking it off my keychain when I travel, but it must be done.

Gerber 22-49445 10-Piece Tool Kit Review

Gerber 22-49445 10-Piece Tool Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You can add to the versatility of many Gerber Multi-Plier models with the addition of this Gerber 22-49445 Tool Kit. There are many excellent tool and blades that come built into these multi-tools, but if you're looking to expand the functionality of these products, then this is a reasonably priced way to do it.

I have a Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier, which is used on an almost daily basis. Sometimes it's just not convenient to go running for a tool kit when doing those 'quick-and-dirty' jobs, and this tool kit looked like a great convenience, so I bought it. The single-ended bits that came with it were:

* Three flat bits, marked #3, #5, #7
* Three Phillips (crosshead) bits, P1, P2, P3
* Three hex bits, 3mm, 4mm, 6mm

The heart of this tool kit is the magnetic bit adapter, which slips easily onto the multi-pliers' extended Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver blade. Once this is done, it holds the bits easily. The adapter and the bits are stored inside an included black molded flexible holder, and a black ballistic cloth nylon sheath with a belt loop comes with it. See the customer image that I posted here to see it all in action.

The adapter accepts any standard single-ended 1/4" hex bit on the market, be it slotted, Phillips, square, Torx or hex. For example, I had a need for a Torx Driver Tamper Proof Security Bits Set for use with certain computer and general applications. They worked quite well with the magnetic adapter, and there's enough room to to store this and other bit sets in the tool kit's nylon sheath.

According to the manufacturer, this Multi-Plier Tool Kit fits the Gerber Flik, Freehand, Diesel, Radius, Method, Tread, Crus and Suspension multi-tools. If it has one of those flat crosshead blades, as do these, it should work. There may be other Gerber models that will work with this handy kit, but if you have one of those, it might be best to check the directions that came with the product. There's a different 10-Piece Tool Kit available for Gerber's MP400, MP600, MP650, MP700, MP800, but I have no experience with it. I personally wouldn't use these with a model that didn't have a locking crosshead blade, if just for safety reasons. One thing for sure is that there will not work with the Gerber Clutch Mini Pliers... it's just too small.

This Gerber Tool Kit is a great idea, one that allows you to extend your tool usage immensely by adding any 1/4" single-ended bit to your multi-pliers. It's an excellent solution if you're looking to maximize the performance of your Gerber Multi-Plier, while still maintaining a high level of versatility.

Highly recommended for those with such a need.

Schrade Tough Tool 21 Function Multi-Tool
Average Reviews:

Having been a huge fan of my Schrade Multi-Tool, I was devastated when it came up missing. My favorite feature is the fact that I don't have to open the pliers to access the other tools. My second favorite feature is the price.I had forgotten how affordable it was compared to some of the Leatherman and Gerber tools.I went to Dick's, Lowes, Home Depot, called Cabella's and Gander Mountain...no luck. But Amazon had it in stock with quick shipment and I was back in business. One reason why I didn't rate this a "5"...The metal doesn't seem quite as high quality as my older Schrade when it came to the shell. The individual tools are still A+.I don't know if it was a change that took place when Taylor purchased the rights to manufacture/distribute the tools or not, but it isn't as good. The sad ending to the story is that I found my original tool within a week of ordering its replacement.Guess I have a back-up now, and I couldn't ask for a better one.

Fair warning: I wrote this review for an out of production item that is essentially this same piece with one more wrench slot and a slightly different Protractor.Either way, my previous review stands for this as well:

I own quite a few of these (see my other reviews) and besides the Swiss Army multitool this Leatherman is pretty good also.I bought it for approximately $43.00 at a local Target and it is a great deal due to its quality and value. This tool feels like it can endure a lot of wear/tear and it does. I've used it to disassemble devices and torque screws very tightly. That kind of work usually leaves the poorer quality multitools in disrepair, but this one endured very well. You won't find the $43.00 deal on Target.com.It seems to be only available at the store itself.I am very happy with it and highly recommend it.

The Core Multitool from Leatherman
The Leatherman Core multitool packs 12 essential tools into one compact, versatile, heavy-duty device. This 4-1/2-inch multitool has powerful new pliers, longer blades, and easy-to-use locks to keep your tool secure and your fingers safe -- and it's the first Leatherman to feature hollow-ground screwdrivers in the standard sizes. The redesigned Core features comfortable handles that are rounded to ensure a firm grip, and stainless steel construction with bronze and steel bushings. Key User Features
The Core features all-locking blades. They open easily with one hand -- just place your thumb at the base of the blade and rotate the knife until it's fully extended, which securely engages the locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is marked with a padlock symbol on the tool, and to disengage it, just squeeze it towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock. It's a simple feature, but it's one that guarantees your safety.
To open and close the interior blades, just grip the handles and swing them open. Each interior blade can be lifted out by using the nail nicks or the thumb lifts. The Core features both straight and serrated knife blades; the straight blades can be sharpened with standard sharpening methods, so it's easy to maintain. The serrated blades are easy to sharpen too, but make sure you're using a sharpening system designed to accommodate the serrations.

I too have lost both the tool and sheath with this clip system.I wrote and let the Leatherman folks know, but they said this was the first they'd heard of the issue.Find a sheath with a belt loop. It's too easy to lose a very nice tool with this one.

Product Description:
Leatherman tools came about as Tim Leatherman, founder of Leatherman Tools, traveled abroad. Leatherman traveled abroad in a 1969 Fiat. During their travels it was discovered that the car was cranky and had leaky pipes. Leatherman conceived of the idea of a pocket survival tool. He worked in the basement of his home to create this tool. He wanted a tool with full size pliers with a pocket knife. Leatherman created the multipurpose tool calling it Mr. Crunch to which he received a patent for this. Sales grew and Leatherman introduced another tool. This one has more features with all locking blades. Then Leatherman decides to go small. The ultra tiny micra becomes and remains the category's top seller. Be sure to check out the Leatherman Surge Multi-Tool with Black Nylon Sheath. With these features, plus Leatherman's strongest scissors yet, Surge is sure to make a splash at the work site. The Leatherman Charge XTi Multi-Tool with Premium Nylon Sheath. The perfect tool for the most ambitious outdoorsman or the most demanding professional. And look at the Leatherman Removable Bit Driver with Black Nylon Sheath. Very convenient and easy to tote.
