Leatherman 830678 Charge ALX with Leather Sheath and Gift Tin Review

Leatherman 830678 Charge ALX with Leather Sheath and Gift Tin

A beautifully crafted tool with great functionality and durability. However, there were only two issues I wanted to address for potential buyers:

1. From a functional point of view, the Wave is absolutely comparable (check the Leatherman website where you can do side-by-side comparisons of different tools), and significantly cheaper. You may want to look into this.

2. Although aesthetically pleasing, the black handles actually feel rough, almost giving the sensation of running your fingernails down a chalkboard. I tried it for a week, hoping that I would get used to it - but I didn't, so I returned it and bought the Wave.

Personally, I am more comfortable with the usual smooth, metal finish typical of Leatherman tools. I don't think this affects the functionality of the tool in any way, but I was just not pleased with how it felt in the hand.

Not everyone may feel the same way, so if you are considering this purchase, I would try the aluminum handles yourself in person to see if it is a texture you can tolerate. If not, the Wave may be a better option, especially given the comparable functionality, same exceptional construction expected of a Leatherman tool, and significantly cheaper price.

Leatherman 831082 Freestyle CX Multi-tool Review

Leatherman 831082 Freestyle CX Multi-tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the simplest leatherman plier, and the most useful in my opinion.I've owned larger Letherman tools like the wave, that I found were waaay too heavy to carry in a pocket (they are best if you plan to wear them on your belt in a holster).I've owned the juice tool which lacked a sturdy locking blade, and was too thick and heavy due to seldom used tools (micra is better for users considering this tool).I've owned the skeletool which was really nice, but still a touch too big/long to be truly pocketable (skeletool is 20% heavier and 1/2 inch longer, which makes a difference if you keep it loose in your pocket).

This tool is light and small enough to carry in your pocket every day.

The plier is sturdy and only large enough for smaller nuts or objects, around 3/4in or less.Altogh advertised as a "needle nose," it really doesn't fit into tight quarters like a true needlenose. The blade is non serrated so it's easy to sharpen at home. For righties, the blade opens easily one-handed, locks open solidly, and opens when the plier is folded (having to open the plier to access the blade is the major drawback of a lot of larger multitols).

I don't miss the screwdriver included in the skeletool because I have a leatherman micra on my keychain. This tool plus the micra is far more useful than any one tool on the market.

If you really really need the screwdriver bits and you use the pocket clip, the skeletool is probably a better bet, but this tool is more useful to me because I like to keep my pocketknife inside my pocket.A useful sturdy plier, a really high quality blade, and nothing else.If you're considering this item vs the skeletool because your wave is too big, this is the one to own unless you really want to compromise size for a flimsy screwdriver.

About Leatherman: Time-Tested Tools
On a low-budget trip through Europe in 1975, recent college graduate Tim Leatherman faced a number of impromptu "fix-it" situations that his traditional pocket knife couldn't help with. Over the next eight years, Tim used his engineering background to produce countless designs and hundreds of prototypes for the tool he wished he'd had on that trip.
In 1983, the original Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool hit the market. By 1993, Leatherman was selling more than one-million tools a year. Thanks to their durability and versatility, Leatherman products--which now include multi-pliers, knives, pruners, and LED lights--are a mainstay of tradesmen and women, sailors, fishermen, hunters, backpackers, scouts, and do-it-yourselfers the world over.

Leatherman 78108003K Juice XE6 Pocket Multi-Tool, Storm Gray Review

Leatherman 78108003K Juice XE6 Pocket Multi-Tool, Storm Gray
Average Reviews:

When I was looking for a multitool, after I determined which features I wanted, my choices were narrowed down to the Juice XE6 and the Wave. They are very similar in features.A couple of things the Juice doesn't have that the Wave does, locking blades and interchangeable bit drivers.I decided to go with the Juice for a couple of reasons.First, it is smaller.Second, I usually wear shorts without a belt when its hot and I wanted to be able to put the tool in a sheath and hook it onto my waistband. The sheath for the wave has a belt loop, more reliable but of little use without a belt.So far, I've had it a couple of months, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this tool to anyone looking for a multitool but who would like one a little smaller than the full size Leatherman tools.

Product Description:

The Juice folds up to a compact, easily transportable 3.2 inches when closed.
Leatherman's Juice Pocket Multitool

The Leatherman Juice Xe6 pocket multitool packs 16 powerful, secure and easily accessible implements into little more than 3 inches. With a slightly thicker chassis than the CS4 and KF4, and protected by Storm Gray anodized aluminum handles, this model really has it all. Along with pliers, wire cutters and four screwdrivers, the XE6 contains a saw, awl and diamond-coated file -- and it provides a choice of straight or serrated knife blades. Serrated scissors, a corkscrew, and a can and bottle opener are also easily accessible, and the lanyard attachment keeps all these tools close at hand. Powerful but still compact, the XE6 will conquer most any task in a flash.
Key User Features

The integrated scissors are easily accessed with a nail nick, and the regular and hard-wire cutters are simple to lift out with their small notches. For easier removal of a cork, a notched assist is located at the end of the can/bottle opener. All you have to do is twist the corkscrew into a cork, then position the assist so the notch rests on the top edge of the bottle -- then lift the handles. It's as easy as opening a bottle of wine in your own kitchen.
The Juice XE6 features both straight and serrated knife blades made of 100-percent high-grade stainless steel. Highly corrosion-resistant, these blades are extremely easy to maintain -- just clean them, dry them, and occasionally re-oil them for years of long life and great service.

The Juice butterflies open to reveal a broad assortment of rugged, versatile tools.

This is a very full-featured Leatherman tool that still fits in a pant pocket. The screwdriver blades snap into place without requiring a release mechanism. The knife can be opened without unfolding the tool.I will miss the rule for measuring things on the spot.I do not like the scissors as well as those on my Micra. I find I am carrying the Juice more than I expected.

Leatherman 64010101K Micra Multi-tool Review

Leatherman 64010101K Micra Multi-tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my first Micra several years ago.I thought it might replace my small Victorinox. At first, I found it to be a little bulky in comparison. But soon, the Victorinox stayed a home and the Micra was always in my pocket.

The scissors are very sharp and strong. The screwdrivers are incredibly functional, especially the single slot Phillips. The file works on everything from metal to fingernails.Leatherman knives are all extremely sharp. This one is no exception.

The tweesers work fine but lack the flexibility of the Victorinox. But you never loose them either! My only real complaint with the Micra is that the knife and tools don't lock in place.Especially with the knife, you have to be careful because it can move a bit even when the handles are closed.

I think highly enough of the Micra that it was the first item on my shopping list for everyone in my family and my closest friends this past Christmas. It is a well thought out, extremely useful multi-tool in a small package.

Leatherman 930711 Nylon Sheath with Belt Loop, Black Review

Leatherman 930711 Nylon Sheath with Belt Loop, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sheath that I got was the second one in the picture, the one with the yellow stitching.I don't like it that much.

First of all, it's not formed at all. It's a sheet of nylon stiched to another sheet of nylon. The sheath that came with my Wave is formed, with four sides. The sides of the Wave sheath are elastic, and stretch just enough to hug the tool tightly without being too tight. This sheath, though, only has two.Accordingly, sliding your multi-tool into it is rather difficult. One might argue that such a tight fit is a plus, that your multi-tool won't fall out if the top isn't closed.Fair enough, but it's also much more difficult to get out and put back in.

Also, this sheath does not have the little hole at the bottom that my Wave sheath does. This hole is nice because it allows you to reholster your multi-tool while it is opened up.You can be working with the pliers, reholster the tool without closing it back up again, and then get the tool out again. It's a very nice feature, and one this sheath does not have.

This sheath also lacks the little pockets in the back for the extra bits.My Wave sheath has them.

Finally, this holster is much larger, about 1/2 an inch longer and almost 1/2 an inch wider than my Wave sheath. Not that big a difference I suppose, but a bit annonying.

This sheath does work and does hold my Wave and Skeletool. At the same time, it's not formed, is bulky, lacks the hole in the bottom, and lacks a pocket for extra bits.If I could order all over again, I'd spend 23 cents more and get this: Leatherman 934810 Premium Nylon Sheath for Wave. That's one that came with my Wave.
