Maglite M2A01H AA Mini Flashlight and Holster Combo-Pack, Black Review

Maglite M2A01H AA Mini Flashlight and Holster Combo-Pack, Black

I'll admit, I love LED flashlights - the pure, white light, the extended battery life, the look on the faces of my friends when they point the flashlight into their eyes upon examination... so when I read that Mag had released an LED flashlight, I immediately went in pursuit of one, and I'm finding it to be a mixed bag.

From a build quality standpoint, Mag still makes a solid product. The barrel and head are made from aluminum, rubber washers are used for a water resistant seal, and they can take being dropped off a workbench. One thing I'm wondering why they left out, however, was a hook for a lanyard - the bottom cap of this flashlight is flat.

One of the main things the Mag has going for it over other LED flashlight designs however is that the beam can be focused - and this is due to the deeper reflector design and the shape of the LED.Focusing the beam does increase its intensity - a bit, but nothing like the old incandescent Mag lites - I found myself using it about halfway between just on and fully focused, as it proved the most practical.

Now though, for the disappointing part: I own a 1-watt Luxeon-based LED flashlight (that cost approximately the same as the Mag), and a 5-watt LED flashlight from SureFire (which cost... considerably more). The Luxeon LED puts out approximately 20 lumens, and the SureFire puts out a blinding 100 lumens, so at 3-watts, it would be safe to assume that this Mag Lite would be about halfway between the two, right?Wrong. The beam is about the same intensity as the 1-watt Luxeon (which is pretty bright by itself); ever so slightly brighter when completely focused, but then the Luxeon spreads its light more smoothly than the Mag.The Mag has slightly longer full-output battery life due to the fact that it uses AA batteries instead of AAA's, but if you already have a good Luxeon or other high-output LED flashlight, I'd certainly say try to get a demo of one of these before you buy one.Don't get me wrong, it's definately a cut above the $10 ones you see in the waiting lines at shopping centers, but I'm wondering if Mag getting into the LED market now is too little, too late?

Gerber 22-80012 Infinity Ultra Task LED Flashlight, Black Review

Gerber 22-80012 Infinity Ultra Task LED Flashlight, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the original Infinity Ultra, but it hasn't changed too much since Gerber bought out CMG.The Infinity Ultra has the double bright LED (for the same power consumption), aircraft grade aluminum, waterproofed to 10', and runs for 100 hours on a single AA battery.Gerber has changed it to have a screw on butt style, which I actually don't like as much. The original solid tube style seems much sleeker, but you can still find them without this change by Gerber if this bothers you like it does me.

I run mine on a Lithium battery, which provides an exceptional run-time, storage life and better cold weather capability.I don't use it constantly, so I'm actually still on my first Li Battery which is now over 2 years old - but it has been on for hours at a time while working repairs for my machines or around the house. They aren't kidding about the 100 hours and that's with a standard AA!

The light is very bright, the machined case is well built, yet simple in design. My model has a lanyard hole in the back end and it came with a neck size lanyard - the newer Gerber model comes with a clip that friction mounts to the outside.I prefer the former, but would appreciate the hands-free capabilities of the latter as an option. It's useful as a signal light up to a mile, and has about a 30' throw. It weighs about 2oz. and is about 3.5" long.It has a "circuit boost" technology to make the LED run for a longer time on batteries with a steady output.

I carry this light all the time, but one thing it could use is a nylon belt pouch. It's not too bad in the pocket, but I like to keep it thin if possible. At any rate, I've NEVER had any problems with this light and as a flashlight geek, it stands ahead of most every other light I own.I fully recommend it and hope Gerber continues with the high quality (it appears they are doing just that!)

Tool Logic CC1SB Credit Card Companion With 1/2 Serrated Knife, Compass, Magnification Lens, Tweezers and Toothpick, Translucent Black Review

Tool Logic CC1SB Credit Card Companion With 1/2 Serrated Knife, Compass, Magnification Lens, Tweezers and Toothpick, Translucent Black
Average Reviews:

This is the best true "pocket" knife ever. Why? Because it's so slim that I carry it everywhere, usually in my front pants pocket, and you don't even know it's there.

The knife blade is really sharp and beefy...cut's through rope, rubber hose, cardboard packaging, etc. with ease. Anytime someone asks "anyone got a pocket knife?" they are amazed when I pull this thing out. It will handle some really tough cutting jobs.

The other features get a mixed review: The little plastic tweezers work pretty good for pulling out slivers and such.

The compass...stopped working after a year or so...not sure if it was ever accurate.

The toothpick...basically worthless, and mine fell out and got lost a long time ago.

The screwdriver/bottle opener thingy...flatblade only and not very easy to use (if you just need to loosen or tighten a screw it's fine...if you have a lot of twisting to do forget it). Never really used the bottle opener on a bottle, but it is pretty small so I doubt it would give you enough leverage for even a really tight bottle cap. But the pick thing on the end has a very sharp point that I have used for I can't remember what...but it is useful.

The magnifying glass works...but it's pretty small

If you buy this tool, buy it for the knife...it's well worth it! Don't let my comments on the little doo-dads turn you off. It is without a doubt the easiest to carry, most useful, and best true "pocket" knife I have used. In fact, I am going to buy myself a new one! My old one is more than 10 years old, and still in decent shape, but getting dull. The serrated edge is great, but hard to sharpen. I've used it so much I have got my moneys worth many times over, so I have no problem buying another one.

Gerber 22-41493 EVO Jr. Serrated Edge Knife Review

Gerber 22-41493 EVO Jr. Serrated Edge Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This knife is great. It clips perfectly on the inside edge of my jeans pocket, and I use it many times each day for opening boxes, cabling packages, etc. It holds its edge for a very long time in between sharpenings, and, more importantly, it keeps its grip and doesn't move, fall off, or open in my pocket. I got my first one at a local store, which no longer carries Gerber knives. When I lost it by leaving it at a job, I searched high and low locally before I finally tried Amazon. Amazon's price was great and I loved the knife so much that I bought 4, just in case I lose one (or more) again.

Gerber 22-45509 Compact Sport Multi-Plier with Sheath, Black Review

Gerber 22-45509 Compact Sport Multi-Plier with Sheath, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a Gerber multi-tool from the early 90's. As far as functionality, they are essentially the same. A lot of people have trust in Gerber from these tools of this era and they were very popular. It still works to this day with literally thousands of uses.

But I wanted a new one because even that one is getting a little worn. I understand this is the compact version, not their top of the line, but the difference is drastic. The gauge of the steel is much thinner than the old Gerbers, it almost feels flimsy. I would NOT trust putting any kind of real pressure on the pliers.

I played with the 600 series at a store just to see if this was a nerfed model, and while they were better, still fell victim to the same problems.

That said, if you haven't been spoiled by higher quality early models like I have, these are still good and functional tools. They do exactly what they are supposed to. I am just sad to see how "lightweight" the construction has gotten. I could not consider this a lifetime tool anymore.

Also, the knife is completely different, the knife edge is completely straight. The one in the picture is the knife that Gerber's have always had but I guess they updated it. It looks silly, but it probably works just as well.

Swiss+Tech UKCSB-1 Utili-Key 6-in-1 Key Ring Tool Review

Swiss+Tech UKCSB-1 Utili-Key 6-in-1 Key Ring Tool
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Utili-Key has to be one of the most convenient multi-tools out there. I don't go anywhere without it, and it gets a lot of use in all kinds of circumstances.
It's the size of a large car key. When it is locked on the keyring, it isn't going anywhere unless and until I am ready to use it. The screwdriver heads are fully functional and sturdy, although there is a risk of getting cut on the knife blade if it is handled carelessly (not like I'd do that, but this isn't a kid's toy). The blade is sharp and stays that way very well.
If you like being prepared for anything that might happen, this is a must-have tool for you. Check out the rest of Swiss-Tech's product line as well.
One warning: Do _not_ carry a Utili-Key in anything carried on a plane. Scanners do know what they are and how to find them. Stow it instead because it will be confiscated otherwise. I hate taking it off my keychain when I travel, but it must be done.
